I just read Ken's Burton's "Grounding in a GMC Motorhome". His last sentence in it says "Never trust that a PO did it correctly". I found out last week how true that is.
I normally start and check the Onan a few times during the winter but didn't this last one. In the spring, I found the battery had exploded. Water must have got low and it over charged. Put new battery in and it would crank but not start , no power to coil or fuel pump. Got out Duane Simmons "Quick Trouble Shooting Aid". It started with 9&5 jumper but stopped when removed. Voltages were good except terminal 1&10 was only 9.5 and should have been greater than 10.5.
Seemed to be the control board so I got a new one. Got same problems and readings with the new board. After some head scratching, I started tracing the wires back from the Onan to the battery. Thought, "that's funny", the starter solenoid cable traced back to the black cable at the battery and not the red one. Got the flashlight so I could see marks on the top of the battery and the black cable was on the - and the red on the +.
The PO had replaced the battery cables and used the red one for - and black for + and I didn't catch it earlier and just attached red one to + and black to -. Also didn't notice that the polarity was reversed when taking the voltage readings. Didn't think about it since it would crank.
So as Ken said "Never trust the a PO did it correctly".
Edit: Should add that after switching cables , Onan fired right up and everything is fine. I'm surprised it didn't mess something up.

Hi Dan,
Note the title of this posting and remember it the next time you challenge me.
I was only wrong once. I thought I made a mistake. Later on found out I hadn't.
Actually, Rob M. caught me being wrong on the coolant flow in the 455 manifold a few months ago. He was correct and I was wrong.
Now when it comes to Colonel Ken..........
