Previous symptom was that it produced 70 volts instead of 120. Replaced the bridge rectifier. Same symptom. Left the geni running for a bit checking effect of engine speed on voltage. Then the voltage dropped to zero... or actually 0.5 volts. Removed the rectifier and tested with multimeter with diode tester. Still good.

Page 40 of the maintenance manual says I should see 38 ohms between F1 and F2... I see 0. Does this mean a short inside the windings or is that test only valid with the armature removed?

Time for yard work so stopped messing for now.

Are you sure its 0 ohms and not infinity?

Not sure... new meter to me. It reads 0 on the digital readout. Same as if I touch the probes together.

That's 0. Indicates a dead short in the field winding which seems very, very unlikely. Are you doing this with F1 and F2 still attached to the bridge? They need to be disconnected to do the test.

Bridge disconnected. Tested across the plastic bridge connector wires.

I am going to get engine hoist from my father tomorrow and pull the generator so I can clean things up and see what is going on. There is a lot of gunk and grime inside the area. Could be that is causing the shorting.
