1975 Avion, Springfield, IL.
Got the GMC last fall & the step worked erratically but would eventually go out when the door was opened & pull in when the door was closed most of the time. Been working on other things & now getting ready tO use the MH. Step would NOT work at all. worked on the wiring for about an hour & determined the door switch was bad, (corroded) went to AZ & got two different ones & used the one closest to the size of the old one. Now the step comes OUT when I CLOSE the door & IN when I OPEN the door???????????????????
I guess I can use the on/off switch. When we get ready to go just open the door (step comes in), turn the switch off & close the door. When we get to our destination turn the switch on (step slides out) turn the switch off, use the step while parked. Repeat when we are ready to leave.

Why don't you reverse the wiring at the switch and see if it will operate the correct way.

You just need to reverse the two wires coming from the motor.

I thought of switching the motor wires, But it worked (out with door open & in with door closed) before changing the door switch.Just changing that switch shouldn't have made it work backwards. The new door switch works just like the one removed. OPEN with the door closed & CLOSED with the door open. I think I'll leave it alone for a while & see what it does. I can live with it like that for a while.

I am not familiar with that step or the switch involved but it sounds like you have the normally open and normally closed functions of the switch reversed. If it is a switch with only N/O or N/C then you have the wrong kind of switch.

Did you use an >identical< dwitch? Some connect 'in-line' with the movement, some 'opposire'. Thus you could have reversed the connection by replacing the switch. However, why not be an empiricist? Swap the motor wires, and if it works correctly, go about your business.

Yep, that's what I got out of it too. Hard to imagine anything else when the sequence was:
1) Everything works perfect
2) Something breaks
3) Install new switch
4) Now everything is backward
The OP just needs to figure out which way the new switch works, then "reverse it" and everything should be back to normal.

Believe it or not, there is a small ckt board involved in those steps. I
ran into the same thing when I replaced mine. Just pulled the old control
board out and used it. The motor (most expensive part) is from a
Lincoln/Ford power window setup. Less than half if you buy it from a junk
yard

Ken Rose told me several years ago that he had so much trouble with limit
switches that someone designed him a board, using a microprocessor, to
control the step position based on operating time -- thus the PC board on
some of his steps -- probably not those with micro switches. I'd rather
have the positive control of limit switches, but probably not micro
switches.

It almost sounds as if the electronics have lost their sync. How about pulling the power for some time and reconnecting? In the MS Windows world it's called rebooting!

Larry, you say the new switch works the same as the old. Did you test is with an ohmmeter? It sound as if you replaced a normally-closed switch with a normally-open one.

Larry, as Steve F. previously said, that step is powered by a FOMOCO
electric window motor. Those motors run either way depending upon the
polarity of the 12 volt DC current applied to them. The simple way to
correct your problem is to unplug the motor harness connector, and just
reverse the two wires in either side of the connector. It is what I would
do.
