I'm trying to come up with a list of all the gaskets and other stuff that
I'll need in order to do an engine swap. Though the water pump
was (supposedly) changed on our engine 12k miles ago, I see there's
a new high volume version available. I'm not finding much info
on the pros and cons though. The high volume is more than twice the price.

Any thoughts on the merits of high volume vs regular water pumps??

thanks,
Karen

Karen,

The high volume water pump keeps the temperature right where the thermostat says it should be.

Just like the regular pump!

Sorry to be so glib. Didn't Rick Denny, or was it Ken H, or Gene, do extensive testing on water pumps and determine that they are all sufficient?

I also tested several different pumps, the difference being the type and
size of the impellers. My test run was from San Diego to Palm Springs.
Varying topography, from cool to very hot temps. I found absolutely no
difference in coolant temps so my conclusion is that if your cooling system
is in good shape, any remanufactured (or new) pump will suffice.

I would be more concerned with getting a water pump that won't leak.  Too many of my waterpumps have leaked.  First from the weephole and then from the bearing.  Does anyone have any info on reliability?
My current pump is a Milodon high volume.  When searching for this one, I read that the only difference between high and normal volume water pumps was the plate welded onto the back of the impeller.

Steve,

Of course - it was you who tested them!

Apologies for my oversight.

The Flowcooler pump has like they said a closed back.It is not just a disc whacked on it is also a different impeller design. The difference is Only at idle. My Cad idles in drive at a light at about 575 RPM.With the AC on and 90 degrees it makes a giant difference in
my car.I do not know what the olds idles at as i am still a newbie and have not had any reasons yet to get under the hood ,Luckily. They also are a little better with the seals and bearings.I just replaced mine after a couple years as I run only water as there is no room or place high enough for a recovery tank.we have a lot of pets in the hood here so i don't need them drinking my Green overflow and dying in my driveway.Spend the $100.If not just for peace of mind.
