I haven't run my Genset much, I have tested it here and there, but just a warmup. It's a newer Onan Emerald 6.k KW, pretty nice unit.
Well the power went out on Friday night, we had 150,000 people without power, so I knew it was going to be a while!
I ran the gen for about 2 hours friday night, worked flawlessly.
Saturday I changed the oil and filter and then ran it overnight for 14 more hours. I was powering my house, via an extension cord and a power strip and the neighbors. I slept in the coach with the AC on in the back bedroom.
The generator hummed along nicely and didn't bother my sleep except when the AC and 1 or maybe 2 refrigerators all kicked on at the same time. The poor generator, got quite a surprise but recovered easily. But the RPM drop would scare the worry wort in me and wake me up.
By the end of the night tho I was used to it and it didn't bother me anymore.
So much for my MPG calculations!

During Hurricane Katrina, we lost power in my neighborhood in Alabama. Out to coach, fired up Mr. Onan, extension cords to house frig, neighbors frig. Spent some time in coach with A/C, working frig, microwave. You get the idea, GMC makes a great hiding hole.

I lucked out. Was not out of power very long. I was out of town, but had the house checked each morning. Guy at work was not as lucky, he was out from thursday evening until sunday morning. and he is not too far off from my place.
there is also a tree still sitting on the power line behind the house in the neighbors yard, but I am fed from the line across the street in the front of the house.
on my list of To do's though, is to make a cord to backfeed the house from the onan. (yes, I understand to disconnect from main line when generator is hooked up). this storm is making me think I need to hurry up and get that done.
glad to hear you survived the storm with the help of the old GMC.
