Further to yesterday. If you are heading inland, to the Willamette Valley, highway 38 from Reedsport follows the Umpqua River. It is very scenic and there are possibilities for wildlife viewing (elk), though it may not be the right time of year. This route will bring you to I-5 just west of Cottage Grove.

Heading north from Eugene, highway 99E parallels I-5 and is more interesting. At Shedd, Thompson's Mills State Heritage Site features a working flour, feed and grain mill dating from 1858. The mill still functions and is open to the public.

East of Salem is Silver Falls State Park which Jim Hupy mentioned. It has 47 electrical sites. The trails connect viewpoints and the rustic lodge. The lodge and many of the parks features were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's. The furnishings in the lodge are made from Oregon myrtle wood. A don't miss!

North of Salem is Champoeg State Heritage Area with 67 electrical sites. The locals call it Shampooy. This area dates back to the fur trade era when this part of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest were under the governance of the Hudson's Bay Company. The Hudson's Bay Co. could see what lay in the future and in 1843 moved their headquarters to Fort Victoria on Vancouver Island. The Hudson's Bay managers were mostly Scot's but the workers were French Canadian and many place names in the Willamette Valley reflect this. The park has an interpretive centre and active displays.

I could go on and on but will cut it here.

Ken, I don't know how far north you're headed, but in Fernbridge, there is
a very nice park just off exit 691. River walk RV park. It is the best
one in the area. Park, hook up, then head across the Eel river to Ferndale
for breakfast at Pappa Joes. You will not regret it. After breakfast,
continue west, over the mountain (in your towed) to Medocino Pt. Beautiful
drive. Also, if you take Eel river drive north a short distance from the
park, stop in the old town of Loleta at the cheese factory and sample the
best cheese in the west. That whole area is really nice. The cheapest
fuel is at the
Bear river casino less that a mile away, exit 692.

BTW, if you don't make it that far after leaving Manny's, in Willits there
is one of the nicest, cleanest KOA campgrounds you will ever stay at.

Ken,

If you are still in the Bay Area you might enjoy a visit to Stanford. The museum and the Hoover institute are interesting. I think SLAC, Stanford Linear Accelerator, has tours. It's a mile long building and straight as a billiard table. It's on Page Mill Road where all the venture capitalists are.

Then again, there is so much to see here you might just send for the family and stay!

Larry,

I think it will be time for me to move on north when Manny's through with
me. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

Dwayne,

I meant to visit the Winchester house last weekend but never got around to
it. Now I doubt it will happen during this trip.
