Since I'll have been with Manny & Deo for over two weeks by then ('way past
the limit for fish & guests), I'm planning to leave here on Monday. Having
used up about all of the available "West" I've been claiming as my
destination, I guess I'll now have to resort to "North", tough as that is
for an old Southern boy.
With Fort Bragg, CA only a little over 200 miles away, it seems like a
reasonable next stop -- unless someone tells me of a "must see" short of
there. Is there a preferred place to stop near there? And anything to
keep me there more than overnight?
After Fort Bragg, I expect to follow US-1 on north, so suggestions for
along that route will be appreciated also -- I'll be asking again on Monday
about those.

Hello Ken
Mendicino is a great small arts community. I don't recall there being good camping there. Just north of Fort Bragg is MacKerricher State Park. We stayed there a few years back and enjoyed it.
Once you get into Oregon, the State Parks are the best. They are well serviced and maintained. I think there is a State information deter in Brookings or Gold Beach. Harris Beach is just north of Brookings with 36 full hookups and 36 electrical. Outstanding wildlife viewing and views of Oregon's largest offshore island.
Humbug Mountain is south of Port Orford. Electrical sites - 32. The park offers beach access a short walk from the campsites. Quiet.
Cape Blanco is 9 miles north of Port Orford, 53 electrical sites and the historic lighthouse. I've not stayed here.
Across the Coquille River on the north side of Bandon is one of my favourites, Bullards Beach State Park. It offers 104 full hookup sites and 81 electrical. Bandon is an interesting and very pleasant small town to walk around.
Continuing north, Sunset Bay is 12 mi. south of Coos Bay. Coos Bay/North Bend is the sight of the joint GMCWS/Cascaders rally in October.
South Beach two miles to the south of Newport is big,227 electrical sites. It doesn't feel huge because like all the coastal state parks it is well treed. You never feel you are on top of the next campsite.
The concrete bridge over Yaquina Bay is beautiful and just one of many concrete bridges spanning rivers and bays as you head up the coast.
Beverly Beach State Park is 7 mi. north of Newport; 53 full hookups and 75 electrical.
Lincoln City has outlet stores, Oregon has no sales tax. Devil's Lake State Park has 28 full and five electrical sites.
Cape Lookout is 11 mi. southwest of Tillamook with 38 full hookup sites. Tillamook is best known for it's cheese factory but the air museum is worth a visit if just to see the huge timber hanger that was built to accommodate WWII dirigibles.
Continuing north, Nehelam Bay State Park, north of Rockaway Beach, has 265 electrical sites. Cannon Beach is a must stop and very scenic.

Must see's in the Astoria area are Fort Clatsop, with it's displays relating to the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Maritime Museum in Astoria is superb and focuses on the Coast Guard as well as the bar pilots.
Have a good trip and post if you need recommendations for inland Oregon.

That was a thorough rundown, Jim. Bob and I especially like the area
around Garibaldi, which is about 15 miles north of Tillamook, not too far
from the air museum. We like to go to the Pacific Beach brew pub, home of
a dory fleet. It's a hoot to watch them launch or run their boats up on
their trailers right on the beach. Nice beer tasting and activities to
watch on and around the pub. Good food, too. Wish we were with you, Ken.

What a great reply! That will definitely be my travel guide for the next
little while. Since I'm not sure how long I'll stay along the coast, I'd
certainly like to hear about the inland choices too -- as, apparent, would
Gene and many others.

Ken, When you get as far north as Beverly Beach State Park, call me and I
will have a ton of inland destinations of interest to a Good Ol' Boy. Judy
and I are going to the California Wine Country for a second wedding
reception around the 12th of July until the 22nd. If you time your trip
North around that, We would love to have you here with us for as long as
you want. I have a level pad made for Gmc parking with electrical and
water. Great sightseeing stuff within easy Toad range. Wine Country, Mount
Hood, Silver Falls State Park, Evergreen Aviation Museum, complete with the
Spruce Goose, and lots more. No golf ball sized hail or tornadoes either..

I'll sure do that.
Manny and I used your brake bleeder yesterday on a coach he's just fitted
with 1-Ton & Manny Brakes. Worked great -- except that we've now learned
it needs a MC too. Don't know why we ever bother to do major brake work
without automatically including a MC.

Great.. We are looking forward to seeing you. It still surprises me every
time I use my bleeder as well. Such a simple concept, but they work better
than anything that I have ever used, including a shop air powered unit
that had a separation bladder. If I remember right, it was a Sioux. That

Point Reyes National Seashore and Light house. About 12 to15 mi. to the LH one way, from SR 1.
Fort Ross SHP (state historic park) the fort is the only Russian settlement attempted in the lower US, on SR 1.
Fort Bragg, I stayed in 1 private cg long ago and avoid Russian Gulch SP steep grade coming out, not for MH. Alt. KOA @ Willits on Hwy 101. SR 1 join Hwy 101 @ Leggett about 50 mi. from FB.
Avenue of the Giants is a MUST drive, stop and admire. Many places to stop of the road and walk in to see the wander of it all. Join in @ Myers Flat (before then there’s not much to look at), State CG may be full, but try anyway after 2 or 3 pm, they may have late cancelations (if you want to stay). Giant Redwoods RV (private) @ Myers Flat (196 spaces ? ft max, some full hookup), Hidden Springs SCG 1 mi. S of Myers Flat (300 spaces 33 ft max), and Burlington SCG 2 mi. S of Weott (200 spaces 33 ft max).
Ferndale (about 6 mi from 101) is a beautiful historic town to visit and stay ( camp within walking distance@ the fairgrounds).
Patrick Point SP 5 mi N of Trinidad (120 spaces 31 ft max), Largest ferns and yellow slugs I’ve seen and Wale watching @ the point on certain times of the year.
Prairie Creek SP 6 mi N of Orick (150 spaces 27 ft max), may trails of interest in Redwoods, large Elk herd to watch, some Bears mainly @ night.
This can keep you busy for a week, and it is worth it.
At Tillamook the Air Museum is in the last remaining, largest wooden structure, remnant of the Air Ship days. It looks big from far away, and it looks gigantic when up close. The second time I visited the area was the day after 1 of 2 hanger burned down. Many tons of green hay was the culprit.

Be sure and stop at Bert and Fay Curtis, They are expecting you to drop by.
Keep in mind, they keep different hours as they stay up past 2-3 to
communicate with people in Europe.
They will be up after 12 noon.
They have some projects there that would be interesting on GMC and Lotus
