I had a chance to pick up a Sprinter (186k miles) for a no-brainer price. I've driven in 2k miles and thought that GMCnet might like a quick review.

First, the important part; at 8500# and traveling at 60mph in 2-lane highway traffic (flat land, near sea level) it averages 21.8 mpg. In small town/highway mixed driving it averages 20.7 mpg.

Steering is very tight, more van-like than truck-like. Braking is excellent. Suspension is crisp. (This one came fitted with the electronic stability program, ESP.)

RPMs are 2200 @ 60mph, 2500 @ 70, 2900 @ 80. It will hold 80 all day long in low hilly areas (Raleigh, NC) and still has plenty of pedal left.

Roadtrek has been converting these to class b's and have the best spec sheets I've been able to find

154-hp, 2.7-liter turbo diesel with 5-speed automatic

Forgot to mention it's quiet. Inside the cab you can barely hear the turbo whine. Wind noise is low, too.

This is what Sprinter calls the 'High Roof' model (73" height inside, less the center rear AC ceiling-mounted console). It's 158" wheelbase, about 22' overall length.

We had a Sprinter as a neighbor in the campground at Jekyll Island, GA. A nice couple invited me inside for a "look-see" with the promise that I'd reciprocate. As a 6'5"er I thought it was incredibly small.

The owners were both, I believe, veteran Hollywood actors who had not had steady work since the "munchkin gig" in 1939. These were seriously tiny people. I could not stand up and, unless I modified a bed to run straight from the back wall to the firewall, I could not have stretched out to sleep.

I thought it was very well-done with the electric fold out bed, etc. but way too small for me. I believe it was an '06 with the MB diesel engine.

>way too small for me

It is small, definitely makes a Birchaven feel huge. But for a class b, it's big. It'd make a good, long-distance, high-speed traveler but that's about it. That said, for the class c models now coming out using the Sprinter cab/chassis, Rob M is right, this is first rate.

The 2500/158wb has cargo area 13'-11" x 5'8", btw.

Several professional friends have had bad luck with the in line Sprinter diesel.  M-B gave one a couple of free engines.  He said they said the boost valve was wont to stick shut and overboost the engine with disastrous results.  Presumeably they got it sorted out.  The v-6 diesels don't seem to have the problem.

The current ('14) Grand Cherokee fits the Moto Vittori 3.5l turbo diesel, doesn't it?  I wonder what's the trailer hauling capacity with that engine..

I haven't read about a 3.5L

for 2014, Jeep has introduced a 240-horspower, 420-lb-ft, 3.0-liter direct injection turbo diesel. For North American duty, the VM Motori engine, built in Ferrara, Italy, has received a water cooled turbo and increased rail pressure of 29,000 psi. It will go roughly 10,000 miles on one 8.5 gallon tank of urea, meaning fill-ups will coincide with oil-changes. Jeep is stating the diesel Grand Cherokee will return 30 mpg on the highway, giving a one tank range of 730 miles along with the ability to tow 7400 lb.

...Aaaand they will be putting that Moto Vitori diesel in the Ram 1500. Will be interesting to see if the other two follow suit. Perhaps the Hot Vee 4.5 GM diesel will come back to life.

I stand corrected, 3 liter.  7400 pounds plus the 5400 pound weight of a Grand Cherokee is about the weight of a GMC.  240HP and 420FtLbs is about the output of the 455.  Makes you wonder....

Those sprinters have their place. They run pretty good, until something breaks. We have not brought any into our fleet, but know others that have. The buy in price is a little over our budget for our crews. What they save in fuel, they spend on repairs. Repairs seem to not happen as often, but when they do, they cost. The other item, that a electrician that runs one said, that when they do go down, no one has parts. so it is down for a few days waiting on parts.

our dodge dealer is pretty excited about the new diesels coming out in the 1/2 ton. claims it is fiat diesel that is used all over the world, so parts and such shall be much easier. also they are introducing some new trade vans. one smaller then the caravan, and one larger.
