I've a problem with my toad - I can;'t find an 11.5 MM belt for the alternator. It's short, runs from the A/C compressor to the alternator. Local VW store says they can't get it. Everyone subs a 10MM belt, which lasts less than an hour with the A/C running.... cos the car fits a 90Amp alternator and the cooling fan runs on high speed when the compressor is engaged. A narrow belt just isn't up to the load. Anyone have a competent source for belts? I spent an hour in the NAPA home office/warehouse yesterday without success.

Try AutoZone. The last time I was there they still sold 11mm. belts made by Kelly Springfield. Some people have stated they were getting 10 mm belts substituted for 11mm there, but that was not true around here.

Johnny,
How desperate are you. I have been using contitech v belts for years on all the VWs i've serviced. Getting the correct width belt hasn't been a problem. You should be able to find a supplier online that has the correct belt. At worst i would be willing to send you one as i probably have it in stock. Just need to know what the belt size is that you are running.

Yeh.. they told me they coudn't get, which surprised me. VW can usually aupply (at a price) any part on pretty much anything they imported to this country. Their parts guy says try NAPA, because their (Geniune Parts Co) home office/main warehouse is on my way home. Their guy spent an hour looking. I can't get too creative, whatever I use has to fit on thje A/C compressor. It's the same problem as the GMC has - 'replacement' belts which are narrower than the OEM slip, because the OEM setup was/is right at the ragged edge of the belt's capability. When the manufacturers narrowed them - after all, a ten percen savings in material - the narrower belt isn't really up to the load. VWs with A/C fit a 90 amp alternator, cos the cooling fan comes on full tilt with the compressor and it pulls substantial current. A/C compresor clutch, cooling fan, A/C circulation fan, wipers, and headlights together will want a 90 amp alternator. Gasoline
cars have less of an engine colliong load, thus fit a 60 amp alternator which I imagine the narrower belt can handle. Since night rain driving isn't my cup of tea, I may well fit the smaller alternator and let the battery take the hit.

Thanks, Les, I'm close to that desperate. NAPA guy had Contitech, but not in the proper length. Let me A)_ check the l;ocal AutoZone as someone mentiond; and failign that B) measure and I'll send you some loot. I know the correct belt will last six forevers on the thing, but the undersize dies quickly. Sionce it's the inside belt (what else) it is a roayl PIA to replace.

Interesting.. and maybe worth a try. However, did not someone here point out that industrial drive belts are manufactured with a different vee angle than those used in automotive service?

Anybody have any experience with the PowerTwist Plus diy belts? I'm skeptical. (and 11.5 mm is slightly narrower than the available 1/2-inch size)

Johnny, With all the time that you have expended trying to track down a belt, you could have called Jim at Applied and had it in your hands by now.........

I will. I wasn't aware that Applied had belts for old Volkswagens. Or even is aware of the configuration for a normally aspirated Diesel Jetta GL with A/c and P/S. Very few were ever made in that configuration, and this particular belt is common only to that configuration.
Mr.K, you got VW belts???
thanks,
Johnny

Johnny,
According to my info you should need the following:
alternator belt 11.5 x 695
AC belt 13 x 947
Let me know if these are the correct sizes.

Auto Zone found and can get an 11.14 x 703, I'll have it Tuesday. Should work. All the listed replacements are 10mm wghich won't work for more than 50 - 100 miles with the A/C running.
Thanks for chasing it down!!

That sounds about right, I'll check the length. The non-ac one is the .longer. It's readily available. The listed replacement is a goodyear 13276, also numbered 10AV0700. I'm gonna assune that last is 10mm, 700mm long. That's what I have on it, and it wants the adjuster all the way out. If it were an 11.5, it would fit fine, because it wouldn't disappear down in the pulley. The 11.5x695 would work also. Have you either?

I'm gonna assune that last is 10mm, 700mm long. That's what I have on it, and it wants the adjuster all the way out. If it were an 11.5, it would fit fine, because it wouldn't disappear down in the pulley. The 11.5x695 would work also. Have you either?

Let me A)_ check the l;ocal AutoZone as someone mentiond; and failign that B) measure and I'll send you some loot. I know the correct belt will last six forevers on the thing, but the undersize dies quickly. Sionce it's the inside belt (what else) it is a roayl PIA to replace.

>> Johnny,
>> How desperate are you. I have been using contitech v belts for years on all the VWs i've serviced. Getting the correct width belt hasn't been a problem. You should be able to find a supplier online that has the correct belt. At worst i would be willing to send you one as i probably have it in stock. Just need to know what the belt size is that you are running.
