Atlas tire of India just bought them. I remember when Standard Oil stations sold a house brand Atlas. I think Goodyear is last American tire manufacturer standing.

That's cause they were a Ford/British worst of both worlds. I see Cooper as a quality product and think it might be hard to make it better. The new Jags are cookie cutter to me and I don't care for all the plastic interior chrome. Other than that they may actually get you to your destination now. .

Actually it seems that it was "Apollo Tyres" of India.
<http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2013/06/12/indian-tire-maker-to-buy-cooper-tire-for-2-5-billion>
While it would be NICE is it remained U.S. owned and operated, with the products being made in the U.S., what really matters is the product quality and who's job is promoted by buying that brand tire. I hope Apollo keeps the "Cooper Tire" manufacturing in the U.S.
To bad the current business climate in the U.S, has a tendency to push manufacturing overseas.
Anyway, most tire companies have plants in several countries, making the same model tire in several different places. There is a code molded into the tire, much like the date code, that tells you what plant made the tire. From there you'll have an idea of who's job you promoted when buying the tire. (If it matters to you...)

Mike,
When my Kumho Road Venture KL-78's arrived at Ken Frey's shop I was surprised to find "Made in China" molded into the side wall as
Kumho is a Korean company. Naturally I was concerned because of the bad rep Chinese tires have. However, here we are five years
later and so far so good. A couple of the tires need replacing and I will replace them with the same tire. Turns out the guy that
has the storage shed two doors down from me works for Discount tire, I got the replacements for $106 each. I'll have to have them
mounted myself but the local truck tire place only charges $10.00 and I run Equal balancing powder.
Regards,
Rob M.

$106 + 10 per tire sounds like a steal. But needing two tires after just 5 years and what? 15,000 miles.
Makes my old Michelin LTX's cheaper. Not that I really enjoy their ride.

My Kuhmo KL-78s are one year older than Rob's. I was thinking about buying a pair of them also. Not because they are worn out but because my spare Michelin has aged out. I hate buying one tire so I thought about buying a pair.
Rob,
If you were closer I would have taken one of your removed ones as a spare. I guess I just go over the Tire Rack in SBN and get a new pair.

I'm sure Goodyear has big opperations in China (as does GM). Too bad they are sending production all the back here instead of selling those tires over there. Locally 'grown' farming. Goodyear is still American based though. There should be a case study on how Lucas stayed in business so long with all the horror stories.

I was reassigned from Hong Kong to Houston in 1999 on the way to Houston we stopped in San Diego to visit my parents. As we were
walking into the Budget car rental office I spotted an XK-8 sitting in the lot. I joked with Helen that we should rent it! She gave
me one of "those looks."
I was curious as to how much they rented them for and so I asked for the hell of it. The clerk responded with $250 per day. I
quipped; "too rich for my blood." He noted; "wait a minute" and walked into the office behind the rental desk. He came out and said;
"well how about $150?" Thanks, but still too rich for us. He walked back into the office and when he came out he said "how about
89.00? I looked at Helen and she gave me a "why not look." So we rented it. I was disappointed when I found out it was automatic and
that they didn't even make a standard version. HOWEVER, once on the road I found that the transmission was so well matched to the
engine's torque curve I didn't miss that it wasn't standard. We fell in love with that car. At that time they sold for around
$70,000 in the USA when we retired to Australia I did some checking and they sold for $238,000 there. That's because of all the
duties, tariffs, and taxes on luxury vehicles. I reckon if we ever hit the lottery we'll get one or the current version.

Rob,
The magazine Classic Motorsports did an article a year or so back on classic values or something like that covering XK8's. Not sure if it's their checkered past or what, but they are darn cheap in the used market here in the states, You can find a bunch of them on e-bay in the 10 - 15k range, which is pretty tempting. Pretty sure I don't need another project right now, though.

Electrical problems and warm beer.
Not sure what trans that car had but the XJS used a TH400 and an A6 air cond compressor.

Don,
Additional details:
Current mileage on Double Trouble's odometer: 137,652
Mileage when tires fitted 108,304
Miles on tires now 29,348
I lied, only one tire needs replacing I only bought one tire @ $106 plus $10 for mounting. Back in September of 2008 when I bought
these tires Double Trouble had a 16.5 inch spare. I found a Alcoa on eBay for Of the two tires that need replacing the tread one is
a little bit above the wear tabs the second is further above the wear tag, I didn't want to replace just one. I did ask my storage
spot neighbor to get me two but then I looked at my spare and noted it is dated 3008 so I decided to use it and cancelled one tire.
Actually of the two tires I am replacing only one REALLY needs replacing and it still has a bit to go before the treads hit the wear
bar. The other one has enough meat on it to become the spare.
All the rest of the tires have got another 25,000 miles on them at least. The reason these two are worn so badly is I left them on
the front for two years running and my alignment wasn't right.
Regards,
Rob M.
