I have to replace the cracked drivers side windshield on the GMCII. It now has glass that says Made in Finland, and I am concerned with having two different shades of tint on the drivers vs passenger sides after the replacement. Any advice or experience on this? Is the only guarantee to replace both sides at once? Gotta figure this out before filing the insurance claim.

Thx

File the claim and let the glass contractor work it out with the carrier. If the contractor cannot match the existing glass then the other side will be replaced as well under the same claim as the carrier is obligated to return your coach to its pre loss condition in regards to function and appearance.

The only US made windshield for the GMC come in a very light green tint. The windshield part number has a suffix of GTN. My glass person refuses to use the Finland made ones due to inconsistencies in their size and manufacturing process.

You need to check around and see who is selling the Finland ones and then find an installer who will put it in. After you have finished that research, then turn in your claim and demand that your insurance company use those vendors.

I personally would not use the Finland ones but if the tint is different you have no choice. One Finland windshield or two Varicon brand (US made) ones.

I like to close out these discussion for future reference - so far i have been unable to find a replacement for the ARVA windshield made in Finland, and if there are any out there, I think they might be NOS - as in I talked with ARVA-Pilkerton, and they cannot supply the windshields. They directed me to Duncan and coachglass, both of whom supply only the US -made stuff in light green tint.

So -I am now negotiating with Allstate to get the claim filed as a two-piece windshield replacement. The installer they selected is actually gonna help that argument. I'll post an update when there is resolution.

Part numbers are: 832GTN and 833GTN

Jim K stocks, sells, and ships these from Guardian / Viracon.

A bigger problem may be finding an installer. If you call Safelite or Duncan they will handle the claim, add their mark up, and pass the installation on to a local installer who may or may not be capable of doing the job.

If you can find a local truck and bus glass installer on your own you will be better off.

That is exactly what happened with the insurance companies, passed it off to a local installer. These guys were at my coach within 30 minutes of getting the call from safelite, knew the GMC and the glass/sealing issues and commented on the poor fit of the ARVA glass straightaway.

Thanks for the reference numbers. Not sure I have a choice where the glass comes from, and not sure where else they would get the gasket, but Applied's price is as good or better than anywhere. The revelation for me when I was calling around for the Finland glass was being asked if I wanted the insurance price or the private party price. My impression is that insurance pricing has 20-30% mark up, so that everybody in the chain can take a little slice.

Jeff,

I helped KenB's installer fit windshields at the Amana GMCMI Convention and I learned:

1) Fogging occurs because over the thirty plus years the windshields have been installed dirt got into seal. The dirt retains
moisture which in turn causes the windshield edges to fog.

2) The better you clean the slot for the glass in seal the better. I used 409, water, and paper towels until I got nothing but black
rubber marks on the paper towels from the seal.

3) If the windshield installers don't have the special paint to seal the edge of the glass use fingernail polish.

4) Once the windshield is installed inject silicone between the windshield and the seal, this will prevent dirt from getting into
the seal.

Regards,
Rob M.
