We are at Jekyll Island GA and I have possible engine problems. After leaving Panama City for the long trip across I-10 I began hearing what I thought was a muffler leaking. Pulled off but couldn't see anything. Engine was way too hot to fool with. Over the course of the 5 hour trip the noise got worse to the point of embarrassment.

I don't expect a diagnosis over the telephone but I would solicit your suggestions for some possible self diagnosis AND any recommendations for someone down this way to help me out.

Anyone ever heard of Xtreme RV in Hortense (waynesville) ga?

I can be reached at two 29- ninethree8 zero zero 68.

Thanks. Stick miller

Stick,
Just going to take a SWAG on your noise as I have had to fix this type problem that got worse the longer it went. I believe that you may be the victim of an exhaust leak either where the header and or manifold and the head match up or the exhaust donut. Does it get louder under load and go away or get softer when you get up to speed? When you take your foot of the gas does it have a mild backfire sometimes? Take a flashlight and look at the matching point where the header or manifold are bolted to the head and you may see the gasket pushed out or missing or a dark exhaust streak. After you have let the motor cool down, start it and feel just above the mating surface and you can feel the leak. If this is the case you can drive it home and it will be noisy. The cure will be new header or exhaust manifold gasket. I recommend the Reflex gaskets. http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/670

I need header gaskets also. I went to JR's link and found them at
AppliedGMC and they are $30.00 plus another $19.66 to ship them to WA.
$49.66 total.

Check you exhaust manifold.
I had the right gasket blow out on our trip to San Jose.
Picked up new set of gasket from Jim K.
Replace it at next camp ground.

Great news. Probably way too late but a VERY SHORT TERM fix to quieten down the passenger and muffler is the 'muffler repair tape' that you can find at any chain auto parts store by the muffler clamps and such. Won't last but a few hundred miles but might make the trip a bit more pleasant.

I had the same thing happen back in January. At first I was afraid it might be an engine problem, but it soon became obvious what it was. I ordered and installed one of Jim K's 3" mandrel bent exhaust systems, and the coach runs and sounds better than ever.

Cool.  If they still sell Gun Gum <tm> get some, a piece of tin, and a couple band clamps and it's good as new - until another hole appears sopmeplace else :)
The Flowmasters work nicely and sound good in the bargain.

I got home. I'm going to the muffler shop in the morning. I have a suspicion both will need replacement.

Good idea.

If the outsides are rusting the insides are also. Not replacing both could leave you open for other issues.

To Explain:

In an OEM set-up, if a baffle comes loose and causes restriction in one muffler, the extra pressure will cause (more) exhaust to flow through the crossover heating it up MUCH more than it should be.

If the crossover is blocked or there is a single muffler (both non-OEM) a blocked muffle might cause other issues but not "over heated crossover."

Stick,

Your '77 Eleganza should have the following sandwich for a floor (top to bottom)

Carpet or vinyl
Plywood (3/4" or 1" I can't remember)
Foam (3/4")
Aluminum sheet

Early coaches had:

Carpet/vinyl
Plywood

Regards,
Rob M.

Todd,

I have noticed that quite often I don't get copies of the emails I send to the GMCnet, however, when I check the Forum they are
there.

I used a walmart oil drip pan ~2'X3' with one inch spacers, filled the top of it with great stuff orange (fire block foam) cannot leave drip pan only, it makes quite a racket Very Happy . the foam has a very high autoignition point...600 degrees iirc. I used walker SoundFX mufflers in original position.

Hi, Sully and all.

I don't know how gmail is set up and what options are available,

but if I add any sender's email address to my address book, then

whatever comes in from that sender goes directly to my inbox.

That is part of my setup in what is named an "Exclusive" mode

where any mail from an address that is not in my address book

or is not specifically identified as "Not Spam" goes to Junk Mail.

Hope this helps you and possibly others.

And I'm sorry, but I don't know what changed in HoTMaiL when

Microsoft did its latest "improvement" but my texts all seem to

come out double spaced. I have no idea as to how to stop that!

Thanks Mac, I was just checking out the gmail help page when you sent this message. Apparently all gmcnet emails from
Rob
Dan
Gene
Ken B
And a few others have been going to spam for some time. I think it's an issue with my phone. I added the above and some others that were in my spam folder to my contacts and well see if that does the trick. I thought it had been a bit quiet for awhile ;)

Hotmail has a lot of helpful (IMNHO) features that I like.

When it comes up, a list of "folders" shows. Most of these

are ones I have created (there is a limit, which I have

reached). However, there are a few that are "standard"

that come with the program: Inbox, Junk, Drafts, Sent, and

Deleted which are the top of the list displayed on the left

side of the monitor screen. The number of "unread" messages

in each Folder is displayed. I go to the "Junk" folder when

a number shows up there. I can then read the messages,

decide to add the sender address, simply delete, or even

report a message as a phishing attempt (I do that a lot!).

My big problem now is that Microsoft seems to always assume

that its users have the latest operating system, biggest

amount of hard memory, and fastest possible Internet connection.

Various processes in the email program are now taking much

longer to accomplish than previously. Maybe (I hope) M.S.

is working thebugs out!
