This Friday and Saturday I will be going from the Orlando FL area to Gainesville GA and need some advice on which routes to possibly take.

When I was working I made many trips to Alpharetta, Marietta, and Kennesaw GA and always did it in about 7 hours blazing along in a car via the interstates (I-75, I-285, etc) and GA400.

Now on this trip I want to take the GMC and do a leisurely, relaxing trip. My plan is to take I-75 and get to about the Tifton, Adel, Cordele GA area on Friday, stay at a campground overnight, and then continue on to Gainesville GA on Saturday.

The second leg of this trip is where I need advice. Should I:

1. Continue on the interstates, GA400, 53 (Dawsonville Highway),
or
2. Go east of Macon, through Madison, Athens, etc. on some US highway(s) and stay east of the Atlanta area eventually ending up in Gainesville.

If, on the "back roads" there are lots of stop lights and traffic jams then it's less stressful to just take the interstate (which I've already seen too many times) but maybe some of you can recommend a good "scenic route" that would be more interesting than 8 lanes of 80 mph traffic but also would not wear out my transmission by making it shift a million times.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Bob -
I work in downtown Atlanta and live in Gainesville.  I do the trip to and from The Mouse  regularly, for the Eukanuba.  Interstate 75 is Your Friend.  The move is I-75 to the Macon bypass, I 475 around macon back to I 75,  to I 675, I 675 to I 285, I 285 to I 85, I 85 to I 985, I 985 into Gainesville.  Traffic spots will be I 75 approaching I 675, the North part of  I 285, the intersection of I 285 with I 85 (known locally as 'Spaghetti Junction").  If you hit here after about 3 PM,  theNorth part of 285 will be busy as will 85 for the first five or six miles.  If you can pass the city before 3P, it should be an easy ride.
You do not want to run a GMC on I 85 inside the city, I 285 is there for a purpose.  Pay attention to the signs and pick your lane a bit ahead of time.  Once I 75 becomes six lanes, the second or third lane wil get you along without lane swapping except at the noted intersections.  Note that the I 475 turnoff and  I 985 turnoffs are a left exit, they are the only left exits  on the route.
I have to lift a transmiotter off a building Saturday morning, but after that, the weekend is free, as is Friday night.  Want to get together at sone point over the weekend p'raps for barbecue and beer/sodea/whatever?
Where in Gainesville will you be?  I live East of town on Georgia 211, out by the Road Atlanta race track.  If you're gonna have some free time, shout me anytime. Cell four 0 4 seven 25 five one 60; or home 7 seven 0 9 six 5 6 one two 0.

Johnny,

Thanks for the trip advice. The route you recommended is also the route Google maps suggested, that's the way we will go.

Right now we are at Reed Bingham State Park, about 6 miles west of Adel GA, exit 39 I-75. This is a nice place to stop at, $33 total for full hookups. Also a good restaurant, Carter's Catfish House, really close by.

Tomorrow we will go from here (Adel) to Gainesville. We rented a place on Lake Lanier on the northwest (I think) side of town. I remember that the road to look out for is Lynncliff off of Dawsonville Hwy route 53. We have to be there at 4PM, no earlier, no later. The plan is to arrive in town a bit early and do some shopping at the Publix at Dawsonville Hwy and McEver Rd and time it so we arrive at the house at 4. We're doing a 'family reunion' and are going to have about 16 people at this house. This ought to be fun! If it all goes to s#it I can hop into the GMC and go to the beach!

If I get some free time I will give you a call, it all depends on what the boss has planned for me. My cell phone is four oh seven ate seven ate ate won for ate. Disclaimer: it's a Boost Mobile phone, I've found that you get what you pay for. For example, right now we're tethering Donna's AT&T phone because there is no Sprint service at this location.

OK, let's hope the old GMC makes it!

Bob,

Glad you got safely to your first stop. I trust the GMC ran great and no need to use the scrubs! Have a safe rest of the journey and a good week.

Tony,

The GMC ran as it usually does: no burps, farts, or other drama. The engine didn't miss a beat. That's what always amazes me about this old bus, it just keeps on going and going well.

The only issue was the wind in north FL and south GA. I'm guessing we were getting the gusts from the tail end of the storm. I was 'working the wheel' quite a bit. I didn't cuss the GMC because for a while I was following a Coachmen Freelander (Ford E450) and he was having lots of 'fun' keeping his RV in the lane, he was definitely having way more 'fun' than I was having! We followed a Montana travel trailer for a bit and that was 'interesting' too. A few trucks were drifting (or being blown) from the right lane halfway onto the shoulder.

Right now there is no wind to speak of. I think the last of the wind and rain moved out about 6PM. Hopefully tomorrow will be calmer weather-wise.

We made it!

Johnny saw us driving through town so we all pulled over into a shopping center and talked GMC for a while. That's the second thing that always amazes me, GMC'ers are the friendliest group of people I've ever met.

I noticed that there are real HILLS here. Compared to driving in FL the GMC got a workout. On a few of the longer uphill runs the temp gauge went up about a pointer-width and then came back down to normal after cresting the hill. The brakes, likewise, got tested. Everything on the GMC seems to be operating fine.

On Saturday we will begin the return leg of this trip.

Update -
Bob and wife and motherinlaw made it to Gainesville, I ran them down in a shopping center parking lot.  Both A/Cs cooling, Onan puttering along happily.  Beautiful coach.. back half pretty much stock, front dinette and couch very nicely done by Bounds, upgraded galley counter, nice TV mount.  Looked like an autotrack sattelite on the roof, I didn't ask.  Nice outside in off white with the elt strip as the accent.  I had two dogs in the car, so I had to head on home out of the heat, they were heaed for a reunion on Lake Lanier.  I have a board meeting this evening, so I don't expect I'll run on them again this trip.
I did steal a handful of ides for the rehabbing of my PB though.

We‘re now on the return leg of our Georgia trip. Today we took the 'scenic route' from Gainesville GA to Lake Park GA and are now parked for the night at Eagle's Roost RV park. The GMC is still running fine. Tomorrow afternoon we should be back home in FL.

Today's trip consisted of about 2/3 back roads and 1/3 interstate driving. We found where Athens, Madison, Eatonton, Gray, the Oconee Forest, and a bunch of other places are, it was more interesting than just watching the interstate go by. If the GMC was going to act up this should have been the day, with temps in the low 90s and lots of hills. As usual, it didn't miss a beat. This is the original 455 fed by a Quadrajet carb and a fuel supply system that's not quite stock. I use gas from Citgo, Shell, Mobil, Walmart, Costco, mostly whatever the cheapest station is at the moment I need fuel.

With any luck the old GMC will make home tomorrow without any drama. It's been a great week! Johnny, sorry I couldn't get to join you for bbq, the family kept me busy! We do this every few years, they're a great bunch of people.
