This year (and last) my transmission started behaving badly; i.e. it doesn't always up-shift between 35-45mph, which usually only happens when hot--sometimes it's even slipped out of drive when going up-hill and took shifting (randomly) between N, D, S, and L to get it back in gear...

...it seems that these problems are more prominent when I'm pulling a trailer.

Is it time to replace/rebuild?

I'm in Salt Lake City, UT. Does anyone know of a reputable transmission repair shop/mechanic? Maybe even someone familiar with our GMCs?

Other thoughts/recommendations welcome. Smile

Has less to do with a shop being reputable, the only parts a trans shop can buy for our transmissions is a gasket and clutch set, the rest of the parts must be reused or scavenged from old units.  Manny has had the gone parts made, new chains, etc.  You cannot buy a lower cost transmission anywhere plus considering all the parts he puts in it and the awesome converter he has made, he really is your only choice.

Is it the original transmission?  Remember, this puppy is too big to push and a tow bill will dent the wallet.  Fix big stuff on your time not out on the road broken down.  Will cost you less and you will have a better finished product if you are proactive on this.  Do you have a mechanic that's willing to give it a go?

Could be something silly like worn/loose linkage. Or maybe the modulator or governor. Or connections thereto, or governor gear? Too bad there isn't a Manny on this side of the country.

Give him a call before you get reamed for work that you might not need, and that might not last. 408-937-1583

Check linkage adjustment and check/ replace vacuum lines to modulator and confirm fluid level correct. I know a restricted filter on TH 700R4 will cause pump whine and the above listed irregularities. Not sure if the 425 filter can get that restricted but worth looking into as well as check proper O ring filter neck tube fit.
