Recently lowered steering column and installed new steering gearbox. Discovered there are no boots on the ends of the adjustable drag link, and no boot on the lower part of the steering shaft covering the knuckle joint just above the steering gearbox.

Can I simply buy boots for the drag link, pull it off, clean it up, and reinstall with boots and grease?

Is there supposed to be a boot on the lower part of the steering shaft?

1st ever RV trip next week to Corvallis, OR. We are going from no experience to an 8 hour drive and dry camping for 3 nights. Fingers crossed.

Jeff, yes there is a lower boot on the steering cv joint. If you have

Thanks for the reply and invite, Jim. Would be great to meet you.

I do not see a reference to a lower boot on the Applied website unless it is part of

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/664

Is that it?

If you're referring to the universal joint at the BOTTOM of the steering shaft, there is no boot covering it. The CV at the top and the slip joint (blue) are covered by the boots pictured on Applied's site

Thanks Carl, I AM referring to the universal joint at the bottom of the shaft. So do grease there or just let it be? Sure seems like that could accumulate a good bit of dirt.

The one at bottom (at box input) is a U joint, not CV. No boot, but yes one grease fitting feeds the 4 bearings. Then the one on the shaft lubes the blue slip joint.

Exactly what John said. Grease the fitting in the middle of that U-joint and the one up further on the blue shaft. I may be wrong, but I don't think the motorhome came with a boot on the blue slip shaft. Only one on the upper CV joint.

I just went through the steering shaft at the Miller work rally. I don't believe there was one over the slip joint from the factory. But, Jim K sells a 2 piece kit for the upper (c/v joint) and the slip joint. I think it's a good idea to put one over the slip joint, because even though I greased mine at least once per year for the last 7 years, it was frozen solid. (perhaps it already was when I got it?). The lower universal joint doesn't really need a boot, as each individual bearing cup has seals around the trunion shaft. When you grease the fitting, it will force dirt and water out past those seals, so less likely to get gummed up than the slip joint. It really helped the steering and transmitted noise and vibration on my coach, by freeing up that slip joint, and getting lube in the c/v joint which was quite dry with my missing upper boot.
