I've read on the net about Gas Buddy & would like to know something about it
as we are planning a 4,000 plus mile from AZ. to Wisconsin & MN. & back in
our GMC.
I did read that Carl Stouffer uses it when he travels.
Thanks in advance.

Gas Buddy relies on local people reporting as they observe gas prices in their area. Very useful planning tool. On my iPad and well used.

Great app! Keep it on your iPhone and refer to it before filling up.
Sometimes the differences in price from station to station may surprise you!

Of course he does. Everybody should...
Gas Buddy can save enough to pay what it costs to carry internet on the road - Truth. Maybe not it one stop, but over the course of a thousand miles, it is a sure thing.
If you don't have a smart phone or web access on a tablet or laptop, then stop in range of wire (McD, BK, DD, Panera, etc) and get on GasBuddy with your route for the day. SA or S&T will tell you where you should be looking for fuel. Load that location. And read on. GB will fill in everything in the area, but be cautious, you cannot go far off track to save money on fuel without eating the savings up getting back on track.
So, here comes the really neat trick. GB in map mode will show prices and locations. Scroll the screen and it will fill in the new locations. Do this both ways of the navigator's target and you may find a deal.
Particularly watch state borders. Right now Michigan is roughly 0.40 higher that Ohio. When we were about to go into Florida this spring, we fueled in Mississippi even though we did not really need fuel, but we wanted to be sure to not buy it in Florida.
Small warning....
Prices are reported by volunteers, and even though date/time is indicated, sometimes rapidly changing prices are not reported. If when you get there the GB price is wrong, have a plan B. Cash vs Credit is also not reported.
Between GB and the card deals, we manage to save a lot on fuel. But, it is still going to severely cramp out style this summer.

I also like the MSN gas station site. I am not a big fan of MSN but they do pretty well with current prices. Caution: the place to type in a town is the second text area down. The first is some other advertisement thingy.

Jim,
One of the ways I use Gas Buddy is to look at the maps (I love maps anyway). If you click on 'map' on a station listing. it will bring up a map. You can zoom out, and see lots of stations nearby. I like to follow the map along my route and look for the lowest prices along the way. I then plan my stops accordingly.
For instance, we are planning a trip to Williams and Flagstaff in July, and I followed the map along I-10, I-17, and I-40. I found that the cheapest convenient gas outside of Tucson is in Anthem, about 145 miles into the trip. I will top off there. Gas in Flagstaff is high and Williams is even higher, but there is a Pilot on I-40, between the two towns, that is cheaper than either of them. If I need gas, I will get it there.
usually I find that the lowest prices are at Costco or Sam's Club. Safeway has gas in Flagstaff and we get discounts on gas with our club card. I will save up discounts and gas up there before we head home. Like Matt says, it will easily save us enough on gas to pay for the data plan on my smart phone. You can get the app free on a smart phone or just look it up on your computer.

| How did you get from MS to FL without going through AL (unless you went through AR, TN, and GA)? AL has the second lowest gas prices in the country, and definitely lower gas taxes than MS. I don't know about the Gulf area specifically, I guess it could be priced higher because of proximity to MS and FL, but it should still be less than MS.
|
Maybe it was MS...
I never looked all that hard. But I could tell I didn't want to buy fuel in FL. That was a fact.
We didn't need fuel when we stopped, but didn't need to pay .20~30/g more either.
We fueled before we left Dothan for the same reason and didn't fuel again until SC.
Matt - not looking forward to 4$+ in MI just now.
