Getting gas in my GMC was always a nervous situation; will I be able to start the engine up after shutting down for a gas fill up? The dreaded hot start! To make things worse, the gas stations always seemed to have a lineup of cars and I always have my own prosecuting attorney riding in the passenger seat. I thought my battery was good but the starter would sometimes chug slowly, stop, and just manage to crank again and somehow the beast would fire up. Well I decided to do something about it. I studied Gene Fisher’s presentation “Improve GMC Cranking For Free,” searched the GMCnet articles, and remembered reading Jim Bounds’s experience with the starter on his own coach. Jim’s article hit home with his advice – renew an entire system if you are looking for reliability.
My starter was very old and corroded looking, the cables were old with cracked insulation and the connectors were so-so. Anyway I decided to go for it so I replaced the starter with the premium rebuilt from NAPA (could not find a local rebuilder), got the largest battery on the shelf at Costco (group 65). I had a local battery shop makeup some double lead cables (two cables pressed and sealed into one terminal connector to attach to the battery). I wired them, per Gene’s article, from the battery (+) direct to the starter and (-) direct to engine block. These are both 2/0 welding cable. The second cables wired from the battery (+) to the original cable position on the boost switch and (-) to frame and are both 4GA.
Wow, what a difference! I think I now need to replace the motor mounts to handle all the torque and high speed cranking from the renewed system.

LOL too funny!
But very true.
I had the same issues, Finally found some 2AWG cables and yeah baby, zoom!
no more starter issue

BTW the PO and the house battery grounded to the engine and the starting battery grounded to the frame....
The battery cables were small enough to feel hot after starting
