Please forgive the basic level of this question, but some days electrons just don't make no sense.....

We bought an interior light unit to mount above the dinnette. It uses 3 12 volt bulbs. There is a wire nut bundle that runs a wire to each of the light sockets and a pigtail to one side of the push button off/on switch. The only open connecter wire is the other side of the switch.

So looking at the light unit, it has only a single wire to each socket. Does that mean it is using the metal fixture as the other side of the circuit - so I should attach the light body to the circuit? Is that safe?

It's got to be simple, but I'm not seeing it...........

You would run your hot wire to the other side of the switch and then run your ground wire to the metal light body. If you don't have a lug for the ground you can just use a small ring connector and pop rivet it to the metal case.

That is perfectly safe and is the standard method of connecting them.
