Well, here we sit, beside I-280 since 11:00 MDT. I don't think it's. vapor
lock this time.

We were moving from Applied GMC to a relative's home in San Mateo at about
65 mph when a short series of "pop-pop-pop"'s came through the cockpit
floor -- sounded like mild exhaust backfires. Then the engine ran fine
again. When I recovered enough from "...what th...!!!" to check the
instruments, there was no oil pressure -- down from 45+ psi. Fortunately
we were passing an area with a wide shoulder to park on.

Finding no visible explanation beneath the coach, I raised the hatch and
still found nothing. Since I still have the LOP switch protecting the
"pusher" pumps, I put a voltmeter on it and started the engine to a few
seconds -- no oil pressure.

It's been 2:15 since I called RVRoadHelp/Allstate (India). About 1:30 with
the first guy brought a promise of wrecker by 1:30 PM MDT. Followed
immediately by another Indian announcing that "...they can't do it
today...". He eventually found another service which promises to arrive by
2:00 PM (ain't gonna happen before 3:00).

Nope, the lifters never started to rattle -- I probably shut down <30
seconds after whatever the failure was. The only explanation I can think
of now is that the oil pump shaft broke, making thep"pop-pop...". We'll
just have to tear into it at JimK's and see. Any similar experience
reports appreciated.

Yep

Esconsed back at Applied GMC. I'll pull the (external) oil pump first
thing tomorrow since Jim's mechanical gauge didn't flicker when I ran the
engine area seconds.

Ken, Teri and I are sorry to read about your misfortune. We are glad that you were fairly close to Jim's. We were never that fortunate. Let us know what you find after you turn that oil pump. I am a firm believer in shutting down at first sign of danger. You probably have saved the engine.

Bummer for sure! That said, think of all the worst places you could have had this failure. About the only better place would have been in your driveway. Laughing

The guy I got my parts coach from described exactly the same scenario and symptom. A pop then no oil pressure on the 455.

Cad engines have the oil pressure tap at the back and the eternal pump at
the front.
When my Cad developed the same symptom of almost no pressure, it was the
bent push rods that let 2 lifters to pop up and releave enough pressure so
the sender could not rdceive any pressure.
Ken , being able to handle repaires will drop the pump Monday AM.
After that if it check out, we can take a compression check for bent push
rod or any other.

Man - you and Joe Btfsplk.   I hope it turns out just a pump drive and you haven't hurt anything.  At least you're in the right place.

Bummer - at least you were close to someone who can help. Just kidding here but: Maybe you should go back to a 455. <GRIN>

You did answer one question I had about adding something to ours. It's gonna get an oil pressure idiot light, a bright one, as I'm not the best at monitoring the gages.

Did you look to see if the distributor is turning?

I personally am hoping you broke the distributor drive gear. It should be replaceable without too much work.

Steve, You can also put a LOP switch in and turn the engine off when or if the oil pressure fails. I've seen this on several coaches.

Well, there was nothing wrong with the oil pump drive or the pump.
Suggested to Ken to take a compression reading, which he did and found
fault there, so I suggested him to remove the valve cover and see.
One rocker stand broke off and push rods lying in the valley.
We let him go to the trailer where we store the Cad engine to salvage them
and he will have it running tomorrow.
Ken and Dennis went to do some sight seeing.

Oh great. That is good news. Glad you are able to help Ken get back on the road. No fun sitting while the coach is broken. Could have been so much worse. Glad he shut it down right away.
Maybe they will post pictures on the blog.

Spoke to Ken today as he was digging for the assemblies in Jim's stash. He said that since Dennis has to fly out in a few days, they were going to take off and sightsee and Ken would get back on the coach after he puts Dennis on the plane.

So EFI and LOP switch to Fuel pump worked as planned. Amazing that the lifter oil gally can bleed off that much oil where you would think those passages would be smaller than down below. So metal fatigue on the rocker 'shaft' ( can't remember the Caddy config). Or Ken were you doing those 5k neutral drops again to burn rubber like Jim's twin turbo?

I took time to see the broken rocker pedestal, it sheared on both the
intake and exhaust side.
Dennis is going to fly back to Atlanta Wed am, so they will go back into
San Francisco to finish seeing the sites.
I have the special tube rocker stand on my engine so I should not have the
same problem.
In 1990 I had a similar problem, but it was only one side of the rocker
stand that went out in Niagara Falls, NY.
