G'day,
Just ran across this in my In Box and thought I'd forward it to the GMCnet for wider distribution.

Looks like Oklahoma City area is getting hit by tornadoes again. We have several members close to the area. Prayers go out to
everyone! Please let us hear from you!

Storm was reported heading pretty much straight
toward us, so we went to the "fraidy hole" and
stayed in it for almost 90 minutes. Storms kept
popping up and we had very poor radio reception
underground and in a steel box.
Power was out when all clear for our area was
given and since temperatures had dropped, we
weren't in dire need of air conditioning. Opened
windows and let cool air blow through the house.
Lots of rain (not blowing in) and lightning/thunder
until around 0430 when all became calm.
Once daylight came, and rain had stopped, I could
see to hook up the auxilliary power cable (4-wire,
#6 AWG) from generator to transfer box and we
then could get fridge/freezer powered again. Temp
in freezer got to around 35F (1.7C) so should have
no problem with contents thawing. They had gotten
back down to 15F or so before we had to leave for
breakfast. Genset ran out of gas while we were at
breakfast but atemp only got up to freezing level
before I arrived with more gasoline.
Power finally came back on around 1315. After
starting with some 80,000 or so customers that
had no power, I think the power company did
very well, indeed. I don't know how many are
still waiting, but hundreds of power-line poles
were brought down, some in areas that were hit
on Monday.
Doin' pretty well here, and had very little major
damage in our neighborhood. A few damaged or downed
trees (here) and that was it. Lots worse in other
places and I think nine folks died in this one.

Mac,
Glad to hear that you and Judy are OK; sorry to hear of the additional loss of life.
I don't think I could live in a place that disaster and destruction visited so regularly.
Just in case anyone's wondering our home in Sydney is about 2 miles from the CBD and we haven't suffered any natural disasters since
we retired there in 2002.
Regards,
Rob M.

Mac,
Being raised in the city I'm used to living on top of people.
One of the causes for the ferocity of bush fires Downunder is because the Greens introduced laws that made it illegal to pickup and
clear fallen trees; branches, etc "cause the little critters live in there."
Along comes a bush fire and the little critters get burned to death ALIVE because they can't outrun a flame front that's moving 50
Kph or more!
Regards,
Rob M.

And I don't like living as close to OKC's CBD as I do, but it WAS a matter of proximity to paychecks that I do!
We also have wildfires and their spread largely lies in the failure of so many people to clear highly combustible brush from their
properties.
Cheers - Mac

A large part of the wildfire problem in Oklahoma
(and other parts of the midwest) is the existence
of the invasive species "Eastern Red Cedar." It is
NOT native to this part of the USA, but is spread
by being part of bird scat.
This stuff goes up explosively and throws flaming
embers for a mile or more, quickly spreading the
fire.
There is an ongoing project to clear this miserable
plant everywhere in the state, but funding is limited
and mostly relies on landowners doing it themselves.
Removal efforts are really obvious on and near the
rights of way on major highways. This is because of
the horrible dangers of smoke from wildfires that
leads to multi-vehicle pileups that all to frequently
are fatal.

Mac,
That's what the Eucalyptus trees do too, the oil in the leaves explodes when heated.

of the invasive species "Eastern Red Cedar." It is
NOT native to this part of the USA, but is spread
by being part of bird scat.
This is because of
the horrible dangers of smoke from wildfires that
leads to multi-vehicle pileups that all to frequently
are fatal.
