Well, let's do the math.

You have a front drive train intended to move a 2.5 ton car pressed into service moving 6 tons with no modifications.

You want to add 2.5 - 3 more tons to that.

What could go wrong?

But that is just my paranoia. I think there are people here who have towed 9,000 and 10,000 pound trailers and such.

Waaay too much weight. I really don't care what has been done in the past
or who has been successful at towing what. I would be very careful in
selecting a vehicle to tow and would go with the lightest possible
vehicle. Your GMC is old, and, as was posted prior, the driveline was
designed for a 5Klb automobile. At 12,000 lbs the powertrain is nearly
maxed out and the bean counter 3.07 FD is very limiting. It also seems
like we need a lot more to accommodate our day to day living needs, and
that adds even more weight. You want to be able to use your GMC in hill
country, flat country, twisty turny roads etc. Go as light as possible.

Mark,
I agree with Steve on this point. Unless you have a 3.70 or 4.10 final along with a good transmission with all the good parts inside and extra coolers then you should not even attempt to pull a heavy load. As for a towed light is best, we tow a Honda FIT 4 down and it weight just under 2500#.

I towed a 2011 Jeep Overland about 30 miles and didn't like it at all. I
have probably towed a car behind my SOB's close to 75,000 miles in the last
fifteen years, and heavy trailers another 50,000 so it's not like towing was
a totally new experience. I have towed a similar weight (approx. 5,000 lbs)
trailer with the GMC a few times and it was much easier to deal with. I
think the fact that the vehicle front wheels have to turn slightly to adjust
to curves etc. is the problem. The wheels resist turning, want to continue
going straight and when they do turn they want to stay turned. This pushes
the back of the GMC from side to side. Somewhat similar to the condition
that the GMC front wheels are closer together and travel in ruts differently
than the rears causing the GMC to sashay.

As you've seen from others, those choices are a lot of weight for a GMC to tow. I tow a 2006 HHR which comes in at about 3300lbs (actual weight loaded and full of gas). I have a 3.55 FD and am mostly in the southeast, so flat lands to small mountains. I really don't like towing, but it's a neccessity depending on where we go. Towing takes a lot of fun out of the GMC driving experience. I guarantee you know the towd is back there and you know the GMC is pretty much maxed out. I wouldn't want to tow anything bigger than my HHR, and if we weren't a family of 5 I'd probably find something smaller.

That must be due to the specific front - end geometry of the Jeep.  I tow a '91 Jetta and I have to leave the rear curtain up and look in the mirror to tell if it's even there.  The coach -23'- drive the same with or without, mileage suffers ~ 1 MPG.  I wonder if the steering damper on your Jeep is addingg to your problems....  I forgot to unlock the steering once leaving an RON site in Waveland MS and the handling in even slight turns was a handful.  I quickly realized what was happening and corrected it.  Does the Jeep have an external damper?
