My new-to-me 76 Birch has new looking tires on it with only about 500 miles
since installed. Unfortunately they are eleven years old, so I am replacing
them.
I just checked with my local tire shop (where I have always taken all of my
vehicles) about new tires. They suggested Mesa Tires. I've never heard of
that brand, but was told that they are made by Cooper Tire right here in the
USA (one of my requirements). For a set of six 225/75R16s to go on my Alcoa
clones, including disposal fees, tax etc, the cost out the door is
$1,095.30. That seems reasonable to me, but I thought that I would ask if
anyone has good or bad experiences with Mesa?
Thanks,
Guy in Sacramento
76 Birchaven

Well that settles that then! I stick to American made whenever I can. I
called the shop and talked to the owner. He apologized and said that the Big
O brand Big Foot HT (which is made by Cooper) is a little more expensive.
$1,276.68 out the door. It's worth the $200 difference to me. Plus it has a
3 year roadside hazard insurance, even for a nail through the sidewall!
Thanks Ken, in the future I will perform due diligence on my own instead of
taking someone's word for it.

That is awfully expensive IMHO. I bought 6 Deltas for $900 out the door. I would have bought cheaper Vietcong tires if I could have found them. I'll never wear them out.

Your reference to "Vietcong tires" is a feeble attempt at humor; is in poor taste and offensive to guys like me, Viet Nam vets,
especially a couple of days after labor day.

I know nothing about the brand myself. I just found that on the Internet. That only tells you who owns the brand. Maybe Cooper is making the tires for them. Who knows? All tires carry a "made in ???" on the side wall. If you can find one you could check the the side wall.
I bought a set of Yokohamas for my daughter's Honda Fit. They are made in the USA.
I once bought a set of Michelins from Canadian Tire in Alberta. I checked the tire on display and is said "Made in USA" I was worried about the US customs people trying to charge me when I came back. After the tires were installed I noticed the 4 I got all said "Made in Canada". A couple of thousand miles in Canada and some good Canadian mud made them not look new when I returned home. It turned out in that model 14" and 16" tires were made in the US, while 15" tires were made in Quebec (I believe).

I'm glad I found 7 16" steel wheels for a little over $30 each and 6 brand new Michelin tires for $100 each. Apparently I transitioned to 16" rims with new tires for half the cost of new 16.5" tires.

I just checked with our local tire chain (Jack Furrier's Western Tire) and they do stock the Firestone Transforce at their warehouse. He only shows three in stock but can get them on a next day delivery, probably from Phoenix. They are about $190.00 per tire.
I also called Discount Tire and they said they were NOT able to even get them (in an LT tire, they could get them in e trailer service tire). The guy I talked to suggested doing what most here have done, and that is to buy 16" rims and tires. The lower cost of the 16" tires would offset some of the cost of the rims and would further save money at replacement time.
