Hello all,

During the test drive of my 1976 Birchaven last week, I discovered a small
fuel leak in the fuel-fill elbow. After buying her in Fresno, CA and during
the drive north to the Sacramento area, the leak grew progressively worse.
But I made it home!

Now I'm planning to take the GMC to Jim K in the bay area to have him drop
the tanks and replace all of the hoses, but I cannot drive it like it is. I
have to replace that fuel-fill elbow before I can drive it again.

It looks to me to be fairly accessible, but I thought that I would ask if
anyone has replaced this elbow, and if there are any "gotchas" to watch out
for.

Thanks in advance,

Guy in Sacramento

I'm assuming you're talking about the elbow from the fill tube to the rear (main) tank. There is another one just below the fuel fill as well. I dropped my tanks a few years ago and replaced all the hoses, and don't remember there being anything tricky about replacing those hoses. Just cut a slit in the old one and peel it off, lube up the new one with silicone spray or WD-40 and work it on. IIRC, it was a fairly tight fit.

Carl,

Yes I am replacing the one below the fuel fill. Your photos are great
reference, thanks. I wish that I had enough space here to drop my own tanks!
I hate paying someone else to do a job that I could do myself - if I only
had more space. haha

But, I am happy to take it to Jim K (2 hours away) rather than have a local
shop do it. I know that it'll be done correctly, and I'm always happy to
support our GMC specialists.

Guy,

I'm glad you found the photos helpful. That's why I put them up there. I do (almost) all my own work, but if I was closer to Jim K. or some other competent GMC shop, I would be tempted to take mine to them as well. Consider yourself fortunate to have a resource like Applied GMC so close by.
