Anyone know the best way to remove the old logos off the GMCs without damaging the paint? I have new logos from dldesignstore and want to apply then but want to do the least damage possible in removing the old logos.

Thanks!

On the 77 Birch I have for sale, I used the heated razor blade tool, but it
didn't work very well; I ended up using a window razor blade and it took me
about 12 hours to remove the major stripe going from under the front
cockpit windows from side to side; had numerous nicks, did not use any
heat, like from a hair dryer. That next winter, I was able to remove the
front stripes on my 78 Royale with the winter sun shining on the front of
the coach; useing a window razor blade and took me about 2 hours; had
several nicks where I put touch up paint. I suggest you try the razor
blade and hair dryer heat; might work better than the eraser wheel that
others use.

I used the 3M disks.
You can buy them at a automotive paint supply store.

Heat gun ( properly modulated) and plastic bondo type scrapers. This will tell you what is OEM Imron (impervious) and what is PO enamel ( not so tough). Followed with 3M adhesive remover but not sure exact part number.

Those plastic ones don't work very well. BTDT! Once you get the decal
off, you still have to deal with the adhesive that more often than not,
remains.

The best method to remove decals depends on the decal. How it is constructed and its condition.

I tried the heated blade from H.Fright and kept damaging the paint... just a little mostly around the curved parts of the body. The stripes on my '78 Birch (Coachman applied vinyl based) came off "easily" with a hair dryer type heat gun and a little help with plastic razor blade. (I did melt a few of the blades!) But I understand the GM applied decals from 1975 and up do not respond well to the heat gun method. I have read the eraser wheel (a big round rubber eraser that can be chucked onto a drill) works fairly well but does have an issue of burning the paint. I'll be finding out as my '77 Birch has front stripes applied by GM that need to come off.

I THINK the early 1973 and 1974 GM decals are vinyl based so the heat gun may work there. I wouldn't know from experience as my '73 had PO applied stripes that mostly came off with a pressure washer... along with some paint. Shocked

I found the least expensive/easiest way to remove the adhesive, that will be left, is acetone. Just be careful about what else you get it on.

A little experimenting on a less visible area, should find you the best method for the stripes you have. I'd do the hood stripes last as they are the most visible. (Unlike my PO who butchered my front hatches.)

Good luck.

I used a stripe eraser wheel mounted to a drill.
It took more than one eraser wheel to remove all the stripes.

Thanks Mike.  I have a 73 PD and right now am just interested in getting off the Painted Desert, the 260 and GMC logos off the front and back.  The stripes along the side are in relatively good shape (considering its age) and given the recent discussion on paint jobs most likely will not have this thing repainted in my lifetime so I may as well get the ol girl looking as good as she can.

Will this process of just taking off the PD logo from the side also remove the large stripe on the front?  (Come to think of it, if I could find a way to replace the front stripes across the hood, I'd be even better off)

Does anyone have a source for the actual original stripes on the front hood of a Painted Desert?

Thanks as always!

Jared

...Does anyone have a source for the actual original stripes on the front hood of a Painted Desert?

Thanks as always!

As I never had oem stripes on my '73 from the time I owned it, i have to just look at pictures:
<http://www.bdub.net/publications/1973%20GMC%20Motorhome/1973_GMC.htm>

Aren't the "Painted Desert, the 260 and GMC logos" part of the thick front stripe across the front of the coach?

Removing them would most likely remove the stripe.

If the stripes are vinyl based, and in good shape other than being faded (not cracked and split) I wonder if they could be re-colored? ie: with vinyl spray paint. I seem to remember someone doing something like that.... I do not know how it turned out.

They look to be separate  logos on the strip itself.  The passenger side strip is fine.  Unfortunately the driver side is completely faded and cracked and just looks terrible.
