Excerpt from the UltraVan Yahoo group

Darnedest thing, I guess all us vintage motorhome folks have problems,
once in a while.

Hi Larry, we had so much fun this weekend. We want to thank you and all
of the Ultra Vanners for taking us and and letting us join you today. We
had a blast. Hope that you enjoy this video and that you can check it and
share from the Rally.

We will definitely stay in touch and will send pics too.

Larry: Against my better judgement, I am sharing this with the ultravan
yahoo group, so they can get a laugh and hopefully not share too much
ridicule.

Just watched the video Kathy did and it it bummed me out man! I'm sitting
in my easy chair in front of my computer and you guys are having all the
fun. Here's the complete story abbreviated; We started out on Wednesday
with great expectations and made our second stop in Albany, OR, the first
was a bathroom rest stop, to get gas. We pull out after getting gas and
the engine dies. After flooding the engine I finally get it started and
it sounds terrible; coughing, spitting, running rough and with a great
loss of power. Since we were only about 50 miles from Lon Wall's at
Corvair Underground and he rebuilt the engine I decide to call him and
have him help me diagnose the problem. We can't diagnose it over the
phone, though we tried. I decide to try to drive over to Lon's, after he
agreed. We get there at about 35 MPH tops. We spend a couple of hours
looking, tweaking and adjusting. but to no avail. We decide to get a
fresh start in the morning. 400 is drivable so we go to the Walmart in
McMinnville (nice lot with trees), get something to eat and settle in for
the evening. Next morning we go back to Lon's, we get there before him so
I decide to start removing the carbs, as that was what Lon thought might
be the culprit. I take the covers off and dismantle the linkage and look
down to see what size bolt holds the carb on, notice a hose laying in the
bottom (neither Lon or I saw it there the night before. Of course it was
the vacuum hose! Put the linkage back on and the HOSE and it starts and
idles, Lon arrives about 10 minutes later and I surprise him. I said I
have something that will make you happy and TICK you off at the same
time. I start the engine and he says you're right, it does! We retime 400
and are off again. We get about 70 miles down the road and the engine
starts losing power and oil pressure. We are close to Eugene so, I stop
and put a quart of oil in and it seem decent so we decide to move forward
(we can deal with a little oil loss) as we know that when we get to
Bodega Bay this will make for a great replacement tech session for carb
tuning that we won't be able to do on 400. So we move forward. Get to
Roseburg, same thing, loss of power, oil pressure add oil and it seems
okay. Get to Grants Pass and decide, because of a loss of power and oil
pressure again to call you guys, one final diagnosis was hole in piston!
WOW, are we depressed. Decide to stay overnight in Grants Pass because of
the hour. Nice RV Park right in town and two blocks from recommended
mechanic to disable offending cylinder. Get that done and we are running
well on 5 cylinders. We turn around and go back to McMinnville for repair
of cylinder 6 and camp on the coast of Oregon and Washington on the way
home. We get to McMinnville and stay at a great RV Park next to the Air
Museum that houses the Spruce Goose and a huge amount of other aircraft
from the early years of aviation to space vehicles, a must see. As usual,
can't get much privacy for all the $150,000 RV owners coming over to ask
questions. We meet a guy who full times in RV and was here for the summer
as he is a volunteer at the Air and Space Museum. He invites us over to
the museum, as his guests, the next day. Of course we have other plans,
he gives me his "retirement" business card and says when we come
back please contact him as the invitation still holds. He also tells me
about Timbren Suspension Systems, do any of you know anything about them?
He says they can replace airbags. Next day it is raining, typical for the
NW, and at this point Fran realizes that her hay fever is a raging cold.
We decide to repair cylinder 6 and go home. By the way the intake push
rod is toast, the rocker was loose and jumped off the pus rod and chewed
the end off. That's why we disabled 6. We either came back to Lon's and
get the push rod or wait until Monday so they could get one in from a
supplier in Kentucky, go figure! Get the push rod installed, adjust the
valves and it purrs again. Can a Corvair engine purrrrr? So I'm back to
the beginning, I'm sitting in my easy chair after having seen the video
of Bodega Bay envying you guys and gals! Everything happens for a purpose
though and so far I think the purpose of all this was to teach me some
Corvair lessons which I believe are endless and to get Fran back home and
in her comfy bed to get well. We met some great people along the way and
most people can be great if you allow them to be by showing them a
positive attitude. In spite of the challenges we did enjoy ourselves and
learned to slow down a little.
As Lon said; "If you are going anywhere in an Ultra Van you need to not
be in a hurry!" I know you guys are having a great time, but you missed
out on the large tin of Almond Roca candy which I was bringing to share.
It is made right here in Tacoma, home of the 2014 Corsa National
Rally/Convention. Bring your Ultra Van or Corvair, I guarantee I will be
there, it's only 10 miles from our house.
