My paint is not all that bad. It can be buffed and can look pretty good from 100 feet. The decals are another story. They are faded and the edges dirty. Now that my hoped for under $6,000 paint job has gone the way of $2.00/gallon gas, I'm thinking that I should either repaint the decals or get new ones made from a vinyl stripes/graphics place.
Anyone have a good experience repainting or getting new decals? It seems that would be a cheap way of renewing the look of my GMC while I try to save enough $$ to get a decent paint job.

If a person could get a body shop that had a large enough booth and would work
with you, a person might be able t..o do all of the sanding and prep work,
masking etc and then just have them shoot it. When I was in college there were
shops that would do that.

Peter,
When I was attending the TAFE welding course I found out that they gave paint

Rob,
Johnny Mac had his GMC painted here in Australia many years ago the colour is
white and done in 2 pac and the cost back then was
A$20,000 I would suggest the price now would be $25,000+.
I have a friend who just paid A$7000 for a basic 2pac paint job on a mini minor
(included preparation)
I am currently helping another friend prepare and paint his mini and I would say
all the materials needed to complete the job will
cost around $600 to $700. The good thing for me is I am doing the welding of
rust areas and knocking of dents and he is doing the
labourish filling and rubbing down.I have had to fix some of his filling due to
him being heavy handed sanding. I will be doing the
final painting which is the easiest part of any total paint job the preparation
is the key to success.

I did most of the art that Terry Taylor uses.
If you want a particular model, I can send you the vector artwork and any
vinyl sign shop can do the work. All they need is the vector art for the
cleanest job. Some place scan a graphic and, hopefully, come out with clean
art. It isn't so clean when you look at it exploded. Only something done as
a vector graphic will work. Vector art is made up of points with definitions
of the curve (tangents, etc.).

The stripes are OK down the side or around the rear. However, if you take
them around the front the width of the stripe needs to change. Vinyl stripes
can't change width "on the fly". That's where proper masking technique comes
in. Its also how you tell the difference between an Earl Sheib paint job and
a real paint job by a professional that knows the business.

As far a I know I'm the only one in the organization that had the stripes reproduced in vinyl. I did it cause they didn't exist. I borrowed some NOS GM parts stickers from GEMRECS for the dimensions especially the curve at the front corners. I also did the emblems for the EII as I didn't know of the ones others had done. Colors can be changed to PB green etc. There should be pictures if you search by me. .

John,
This may be the route for me to take. Have the stripes and decals duplicated and use them to give me more time before I absolutely need it repainted.
I could not find the pictures you posted. I searched the GMC photo site but no luck. I would like to see them.

Having them made and applying them is the easy part. The real bear is
getting the old ones off. The answer used to be the Eastwood eraser
wheels. The newer kid on the block is this one: *
http://tinyurl.com/mtgmlqo*
**
It is still a very labor intensive process. I have found that it works a
bit faster if the side of the coach you're working on is in the sun*.*
Using a tool with a heated, replaceable razor blade will work, but they
tend to gouge the paint and burn fingers. I found no spray on dissolver
that is effective on decals as old as our. You can find several youtube
vids showing the use of various tools but those are all on fairly new vinyl
decals.

When you were in college, you had other important aspects-- you had youth, energy, strength and the ability to just get it done. Go for it but I think you will find you really don;t want to work that hard! The best way to demoralize a painter it to put a DA in his hand and tell him to go prep a GMC, they are used to knocking out a couple of cars a day-- a GMC prep will go on-- and on-- and on. If he knows what he's doing and tries to do what's right-- if he finishes he will usually say "he'll never do that again". Sorry but it's not easy to paint these if you do it right. Shooting the paint is just a line list of a 4-6 page list of steps and labor to a full restoration. If you are going to expend the energy to do it at all you should do it right. It's said we are in Florida and you gays are everywhere else, I have 3 coaches right now in our shop from the left coast, 1 from Berkley! We're building 4 commercial machines for a customer in
Texas, we have motor projects here from New Mexico, Texas, etc.
You will find when it comes to unique vehicles and finding someone other than "Bubba" saying "Gosh, always wanted to work on one of them there" bringing is cross country may be the best and most economical alternative-- it might cost less to bring it than repairing what someone else screwed up! Hey, you had to drive it to them anyway...

If a person could get a body shop that had a large enough booth and would work
with you, a person might be able t..o do all of the sanding and prep work,
masking etc and then just have them shoot it. When I was in college there were
shops that would do that.

Peter,
When I was attending the TAFE welding course I found out that they gave paint
and body courses too and you could bring your own
vehicle to work on. Looks like I'll be taking a paint and body course!

Rob,
Johnny Mac had his GMC painted here in Australia many years ago the colour is
white and done in 2 pac and the cost back then was
A$20,000 I would suggest the price now would be $25,000+.
Peter
