Hi all, I have a leaky seal at the top of the steering box. Not too bad, but I hate leaks. I was wondering if it is replaceable in the coach or not. With the grill out, there seems like enough room to work.

If so, is there anything special needed? I haven't been able to find a good description on how it's done, but it looks like I just need to unscrew the top, pop out a retainer and pry out the seal. I am wondering if any thrust or preload adjustments are disturbed by removing the top. It seems like it could be.

I've only replaced whole steering boxes and was always told not to screw with them.

What do you guys think...Thanks

Sir: don`t have to unscrew nothin. Remove the steering shaft marking alignment and remove 1 snap ring, flat washer, felt wiper, then pop the seal out with a screwdriver. The new seal should just about hand push in. It has a rubber dust shield. Not a lot of pressure on it.

Daryn,

I hope you ordered the right part: Edelmann 7095. I got the wrong part
from a GM dealer when mine popped out a while back because I didn't seat
the snap ring properly.

Sent from WalMart in Lemesa, TX. About to post to
http://kenndennis.blogspot.com/ for today.

eep in mind that there may be a reason the top seal on the gear box sprung a leak.  If the alignment bushing in the box that holds the input shaft gets worn, the shaft wobbles around and tears out the seal it goes throug.  Yea, you can replace the seal but as the shaft continues to wobble, it may do the same thing to the new seal assembly.  If the gear box has been faithfully doing it's thing for you for a long time, it may be time to give it a gold watch and start the clock back to 0 on a different gear box.  There are no "new" ones so you will be dumping your peace of mind into the rebuilt parts world but hey, here we are!!  If you install a rebuilt gear box right away and put it through it's paces to find out it's working well-- great-- if not take it back.

Just keep this in mind when changing that seal, I yank it out oif that seal blows...

Thanks All,

It's really not leaking much. A couple of drops. It seemed to get worse after I flushed out the old fluid. It was pretty dirty. Might of flushed out the dirt that was helping to keep it sealed. I will check carefully for any play in the shaft.
From looking at what needs to be done, I think I'm going to attempt changing in the driveway. I'll let you know if I find anything unusual.
Thanks again!

A quick update. The seal was pretty easy to change in the coach. The hardest part was getting the damn steering shaft off. After that it was about 15 minutes to swap the seal.
Everything felt tight as far as the input shaft goes but I guess we'll see if the problem is more than an 18 year old dried out seal. I feel pretty confident, but time will tell.
Thanks all for all of the help. You guys are the greatest...

I changed the seal on the steering box last year, but I never changed the o-ring that came with the kit. It looks like it goes on the adjusting ring and I didn't think it was worth messing with. Well, it looks like it might be a new leak. Does anybody have any experience changing this o-ring? Whats likely to happen if I try screwing around with it? Other than the leak, she steers perfectly.
It all seems pretty simple, but any tricks or pitfalls to avoid would sure be good to know ahead of time.
Thanks all for your help...
