I have taken the steering wheel off and got it broke down to the point where you put it in run position and put the screw driver and press the tab up. My issues is I press the tab up and pull on the key and it will not move! Any suggestions as the tab I can press up but can not get the switch out.

Okay figured it out and got the new one in. Still having issues when I turn it to run not evrything coming on such as the fuel pump and the air pump in the back (as I know I have a slow leak). I can jiggle it around and it comes on and can also engage the started by jiggling without turning it all the way. Any thoughts?? Suggestions?? I have not put the column back together yet as I only want to break it down once if possible.

Sir: If you are talking about the white plastic tab in the square hole that is not it. That is the key buzzer activator. The lock release is in the long vertical slot. It is barely wide enough to get a knife blade in. Push in as you jiggle and pull. The key buzzer switch (the 2 long flat copper strips)have to be removed first. Remove the key and pull on the plastic tab with plires. Replace the key and push in the long slot to release. This is only the lock cyl and is not the ignition switch. It is located on the outside of the column under the dash. To replace the key cyl put key in and push in lock while you turn. Remove the key and push up the white plastic tab in the square hole and replace buzzer switch with the spring attached.

Thanks C Boyd looks like I need to get to the switch at the bottom of the column. Any clue how hard that is to get to and the part number of that switch? Now if I can find a good S-15 steering wheel might go ahead replace the orginal.

It is a little easier if you remove the lower dash panel. The screws are acessable from under the left side. The ignition switch runs up and down as the column the lower switch that goes across the column is the neutral safety / back up light switch, and you will probably need eyes in your fingers. 11/32 1/4" drive socket maybe.

The 2 screws are almost inline straight below the tilt lever.

C explained it very well. Most likely a slight adjustment of the switch will hit the sweat spot. I've been driving GM cars since 1969( same year they went with that style locking column) and never have had one go bad FWIW.

Okay got a chance to try and adjust the ignition switch. It is alot better but may have to name her Christine as I turned it to the on position and here the electric pump and air pump come on but then about 14 seconds later she just started on her own with out turning the whole way. So guess I will have to continue to adjust. I do have a new switch to try if it continues.
