So, here are the Cheers and Jeers of the last trip

Cheers-
Recharging A/C and blocking off LH side vent improved airflow and cooling from dash A/C


New 6v house batteries work great when controlled through Yanida combiner. 2 full days on DC with no issues.

Climbed 14% grade for 2 miles (20MPH and me solo, family caught ride with friends up the grade)


Trans temp never over 170F even pulling on long grades.


Jeers -
New fan clutch (severe duty) doesn't cut in and out consistently


Generator - Coil failed ($$$ item) genset inop - kids hot, but not complaining Smile


Mixed -
Electric fuel pump did correct vapor lock at 100F on blacktop, but not immediately, nor completely. Occasional hesitation even with pump running.

I wanted them out of the coach for weight and safety. In my best Chuck Yeager drawl, I asked for a stick of Beeman's, told the Lahsa Apso to sit down and off we went! I figured if that thing stalled out on the way up it was gonna be one heck of a back-up job back down that twisting road.

IIRC, you have a Kohler and not an Onan, but 'A' has a good point. I would be checking other stuff before I replaced an expensive coil. I guess if you have no spark, the main culprit is likely the coil, but I had a failing fuel pump that could have been easily mis-diagnosed as an ignition problem.

He has a 4kw Kohler in a 26'? Or an after market genset? A GMC OEM 4kw Kohler only has one cylinder. A coil for a riding lawnmower might work.

I can't see spending $2K on another old genset. I'll buy 2 new inverter/gens before that. I might have to build a set of sidepipes to run them while on the road!

Mine was a 1980's vintage 2 cylinder Kohler which is mighty robust engine (or go-bust, I can't remember). There is no spark at the plug and I have removed the coil and hope to find a place to test it locally. Before I lay out $160 or so for a coil, it better have a toe tag on it! If it tests okay, I'll check points, then onto various relays on the control board.

Dang thing ran flawlessly all week powering my buffer while I shined it up.

If it s wasted spark setup, and the coil tests bad, see if you can get a coil from a Harley-Davidson shop. Might be less than $160.

Don't forget that your operating manual for the 1973 motorhome is 40 YEARS OLD!

A lot has changed in the last 40 years and that information about oils is way out of date now.

Viscosity has not changed in 40 years. Additives and what-not change, but viscosity is what it is.

Rebuild the engine to closer tolerances and 5W oil will hold pressure where it needs to. Otherwise, you have a 40 year old engine built to 40 year old clearance specs.
