It looks like my dipstick is WAY WAY off.

I'm finally paying attention to calibrating the dang thing.
I figured it was off, but wow....

I changed the oil, put on a new filter and new cooler lines.
I put in 4 quarts, checked. nothing on the dipstick.

put in 2 more, still nothing?
Run the engine, let it sit, no change.

1 more, ok it's up the add...
wait I have 2 extra quarts!

Rats, who was supposed to be counting?

So now that I have the oil filter full, should I drain 2 quarts and say thats full?
Or drain 3??

The dpistick calibration procedure I read used an empty filter and 5 quarts I believe.

Keith, are you close enough to borrow a dipstick? MAybe another GMCer in the area? I think I would take that stick over to another owner's and compare it to his.

Mine is right on. Just had oil plug out for a week draining. Dumped the filter, added 5 quarts and it is just above top of full line. Fire up engine, and now it is below the top of full line.

I will pull mine out and send you some pics and measurements tomorrow.

There ya go, Jon can help you. Mine too is very accurate. If your's and Jon's are the same length then I d say what John did, the length of the tube needs to be checked.
Let us know what you find.

Thanks Jon!
I was going to ask you how yours was.
Can you measure the dipstick tube too??
I know thats the hard part, but I think they both have to be right.

I think either way I'm going to dump the oil and refill
I think thats the only way to know for sure.

At least with the measurement I can get close

If you have 2 coaches and 2 dipsticks. Try both dipsticks in both coaches. That will tell you if the dip sticks read the same under both coach conditions. You should easily be able to compare dip stick lengths and tube lengths.

Some of the coaches have the tube next to the exhaust manifold deteriorated
and the stick dangles and never enter the pan.
Just like sex.
