I'm changing my oil for the first time and removing
the break in oil, I had the Wix filter number writen down
but I can't find it. I remember someone saying there is
a larger capacity filter available. What does every one
think is best for a 403? We made it to Dothan on our
maiden trip in one piece and have 890 miles on it and
we love it!

Thanks

I have been using Motorcraft filters since I found out Fram was junk. I wonder what the collective opinion is on Motorcraft filters (besides putting a FORD product in a GMC).

ac/delco

Somewhere on line someone cut oil filters apart. I don,t have time to look right now, but after seeing what is inside I believe the ac is best.

Keep in mind I have been wrong in the past.

Go to NAPA. Their Gold line Filters are made by WIX. Take the part number for the Toro filter you need, then ask the counter guy for the deeper version of the same filter. (different part number) It does not have an anti-drain valve, but the filter cannot drain down because it is mounted bottom down. The deeper version will fit on the 455 with some clearance room to the block. I don't know about the fit for the 403.

Another myth on the GMC net. Get the cheapest filter that fits the GMC application. First of all the filter is designed to withstand 4 oil changes. We change oil over twice as much as necessary. This net scares people to use only one filter and one oil type and way over needed intervals. If it makes you feel better do it, but if you care about your wallet and the environment, be smart.

Most Hondas these day have a Maintenance Minder. It tells you when to change oil plus other maintenance things. My daughter's Honda Fit runs 10,000 to 11,000 miles before it says to change oil. The MM also give codes telling you what else to do at that point. The MM only gives an oil filter change code every second oil change. That is 20,000 to 22,000 miles for her on one oil filter.

AC PF24 is the AC with anti drainback. Wix is 51258. I have a note that deep is 51049. Onan is Wix 51762
Honda at 10k miles is about same as GMC at 3k miles in terms of pounds of fuel burned. Worse in-terms of accurate engine management (cleanness) and severe duty constant conditions. Different world.

Also remember a little 4 cyl that might hold about 5 qts and an 8 cyl 455 that holds 'about' 5 quarts is asking the v8 oil to suspend twice as much of the combustion byproducts in a similar oil volume.

Actually the Honda is 3.5 quarts vs. 6 quarts for the 455.

Even my 1970's vintage airplane (with oil filter) goes about 7000 miles between oil changes.

Even my 1970's vintage airplane (with oil filter) goes about 7000 miles between oil changes. It is run at 70% to 75% of power most of the time and 100 % for the first 20 or so of each trip. In that time it will burn 500 gallons of gas. So I think the total amount of fuel burned, while relevant, is not as big a factor as you claim.

Larry,

I agree that WIX, AC DELCO, NAPA and maybe AUTOLITE all are good filters (and I have used them). That said I also agree to stay away from FRAM. In another life, I was the Maintanance Officer for an ARMOR BATT. After that experience I am not ashamed to say that I am anal about maintanance. You can not be TOO overboard with oil and grease. Just use right stuff. No two GMC owners will agree on oil and filters or how often to change them (same with tires). I am runninng one of the last flat tappit (sp? hey I'm a retired engineer not an English teacher) KOBA 455s and doing just fine. I use oil designed for that
engine.
Now I'll get off my hi horse. See ya'll aat Bean Station.

I never understood trying to save $2 on things like oil filters.
I spent thousands on the coach
more thousands on updates and repairs.

What difference does 2 bucks make. Gt a good one

Guy at work had a 318 Durango. "I'm going 7500 miles between oil changes and never change trans fluid." I said humm "some Chryslers are prone to slugging. Maybe in summer stretch it to 7500 but in Chicago winters I'd stick to 3 months". A week later he was leaving to go look at new vehicles. "Motor started knocking and was done." Oil and filters are cheap compared to engines, especially with the R and R hours in a GMC. I don't over do the change intervals and don 't like the throw away society, but do run the best filter for the extra $2. Some piece of mind.
