There is a problem with the WIX transmission oil filters.
The tube that slides into the transmission is undersized and majority
of the manufactures aquire them from the same source.
One can find an O Ring that has a fatter styleO Ring that can fill the
gap and work.
Wix filter is not worth the money you pay when it comes from the same source.

Other than that, Wix has always been good. I wonder if they know about it and would be willing to correct even if that only meant including the right O ring instead of fixing the tube. I thought most Wix were made here. Darn.

Wix, like any public owned co. is profit motivated.
I put in few calls and they were not too concerned as the volume of
sales for this product is very low.
I returned 12 units to our Warehouse as defective.
I will search for an O ring that will fit properly by contacting our O
ring supplier.
Being in the filter industry for over 30 years, I can tell you that
having a metal base for the media to bond to is only showmanship. The
quality of the media is what counts.
Media bonds better to paper better than to metal.
We sell Wix only because the GMC community has bought into their showmanship.

Thanks to Jim for sharing this information. Can't imagine what sort of damage could occur if the filter tube would become dislodged in the transmission. Hopefully the appropriate sized o-ring will at least serve as a patch repair.

Folks,

Go here for a look at a good oil filter. (My dad's design is what you'll be
looking at -- developed in 1959).

Champion, who merged with STP in 1970, is located in a small town in
Southern Illinois not too far from Evansville, Indiana.

The filter for the TH425 is Fram FT1019A.

Sounds like the exact problem I had with mine.Trans acted as if it were sucking air for a no go situation. I'll be waiting for the correct o-ring number for sure.

Whenever I do a transmission oil change on any of my vehicles, I get ATP filters from my local premium parts house. They are professional grade and come with a premium 'self healing' gasket.

What tranny filter does Manny use? Does he have a bunch of old Wix in stock and hasn't experienced problems with the new ones?

Here is a picture album that show the correct layout of the best filter for your transmission. The bad news is that there are no longer made. I had picked up several at an auto dealership.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/general-pictures/p36768-ac-transmission-filter.html

There are about 6 pictures that show the filter.

Jim B had said that he likes the ATP filter part number B-40. He said it fits as it should.

JR,

Do you have one of these left? If yes you could use it and make a drawing showing:

1) OD of the tube that goes from the filter body to the transmission
2) The overall length of the tube that goes from the filter body to the transmission
3) The distance between the filter body to the "bead" in the transmission tube
4) The length of the inlet tube that extends from the filter into the transmission fluid
5) The angle of the inlet tube referenced to the bottom of the filter housing
6) The dimensions of the "step" in the inlet tube. I reckon that is there too keep the inlet tube from sealing off on the pan and
restricting flow

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/general-pictures/p36766-ac-transmission-filter.html

If my memory serves me correctly this filter is very coarse fibers of come kind, I am wondering if there is anything to be gained by
replacing it versus flushing it by flowing diesel fuel (?) through it backwards until a clear flow exists the angled tube.

Regards,
Rob M.

Yea, what about what Rob said? Is there a way to clean our filter for reuse? I have one good filter left.

I bought a few hundred five years ago. I still test them before installing.
I had one that didn't hold breath pressure but I had two that didn't pass
breath test when they were made here.
