Hi all. We are back on our way to Florida from Huntington Beach, currently in Dateland AZ. Had a wonderful visit with our son - and thanks again to Steve W for the help.

The water problem has not reappeared, the engine makes enough hot water and we are set for now.

So we think tonight we would like to stay around Benson, maybe Willcox - any recommends or other thoughts?

We plan on crossing on I10 and then down the west coast of Florida. Neither of us has been that way and we are geographically challenged - anything we should know, places to must stop, good parks etc with hookups

We can only get on the web occasionally so may be a while in responding.

thanks again to all

Benson has a number of RV parks just off the exit to the South and a few good resturants. Steve Ferguson lives about 30 miles south in Sierra Vista. If you can drive further, Lordsburg NM has a good KOA.

Jeff and Mary Kay, in Louisiana, take I12 from Baton Rouge to Slidell to
bypass New Orleans. It will be shorter/more direct. Freeway all the way.

Jeff & Mary Kay,

About 35 miles southeast of Willcox is one of our favorite camping spots, Chiricahua National Monument:

http://www.nps.gov/chir/index.htm

You won't regret taking the side trip down there to stay overnight or even a day or two. It is all dry camping, but they do have flush toilets and a grey water dump. You will have to unhitch your towd and back into a space. They have a length limit of 29', so you're in. There is a diagram of the campground just inside the entrance, look it over and try to find a good site as you go in.

Before entering the campground, you will want to raise your rear suspension to the max. There are some big dips to negotiate in the campground, but they are not a problem. I highly recommend taking a drive to the top of the mountain or, better yet, take the ranger shuttle to the top and hike down to the ranger station. You will likely see deer and turkeys in or near the campground. It is a WONDERFUL place. We camped there with the Jacobson's last year and they enjoyed it too.

If you don't want to go as far out of your way as Chiricahua, there is a nice campground at the Triangle-T Guest Ranch in Dragoon, AZ. Just as you approach Texas Canyon (where the rest areas are) you exit on Dragoon Road and turn right. Just after a sharp left turn in the road is the entrance to Triangle-T. The Saguaro Jetset is planning a rally there in November.

Unless you've lost something in New Orleans, take I 12 around it.  For good Cajun cooking stop in Breaux Bridge for a meal.  Eat anywhere in town except the chain joints, they're all good.

Enjoy the ride.

If you have not seen Carlsbad caverns, the short trip off of I10 into NM to see the caverns is worth the time. Sure, maybe you've seen pics of it, but NO PICTURE can begin to describe the beauty of these caverns. A good time of the year to go also. Kids are in school so a weekday visit is what you want. There is a small private park at the entrance to Carlsbad park in the town of Whites City. Not the best park we ever stayed in, but OK and rates were fair. The it is a short trip up the mountain to the caverns. If you have not seen this, it is really worth the time. JMHO

That's where we will be a week from yesterday. We plan to leave Las Cruces, where Hal K has graciously offered an overnight parking spot, and heading to Carlsbad Caverns in the morning of May 1. Unfortunately, Kathy planned only a day stop there and after a cave tour, we will be heading to Ft Stockton, TX for the night. Then on to San Antonio, via Del Rio, for a couple of days where we will drop off Rob M's generator. We plan to stay in San Antonio for a few days then move on to Fredericksburg, where we will base for a couple of side trips. We're getting excited about it!

If you are coming thru El Paso, Texas, we have a casino not too far from
the off ramp and you may park overnight for I think $5.00. My Shop is
around the corner and you may park there over night free.

Marcel, It is just that when we get to Texas, we get lonesome for tall
trees and green fields of Oregon. I guess if you adapted to the El Paso /
Juarez, Rio Grande area, it might be described as majestic and expansive.
My perspective is somewhat different. Doesn't make me right, only
different. Was not looking to insult or offend anyone.

Go north from Las Cruces to US 70 and then east to White Sands National Monument.

The white sand dunes are beautiful.
I was there at sunset and that day the full moon was rising as the sun was setting. IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!

A neat museum at the Army Missile Range too.

Then head south to Carlsbad Caverns.

I always laugh when I enter Texas from the east on I-10 and note the mile post. Coming from the west realize that you will cross a time zone east if El Paso and you will not leave Texas until after milepost 800.

I love the Fort Davis area, about 40 miles south of I-10 (near the I-10/I-20 split).

Some things to see there:

McDonald Observatory (Telescope tours and evening star parties):
http://mcdonaldobservatory.org/visitors

Davis Mountains State Park:
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/davis-mountains

Fort Davis National Historic Site:
http://www.nps.gov/foda/index.htm

I always boon dock when I visit there, so I have not stayed at the parks with hook-ups, but there are hook-ups at the State Park ($20-$25) as well as the Prude Ranch (http://www.prude-ranch.com/) which is just a few miles from the State Park on 118.

<..snip..>

We plan on crossing on I10 and then down the west coast of Florida. Neither of us has been that way and we are geographically challenged - anything we should know, places to must stop, good parks etc with hookups

Back in my Apollo days we lived down in Seabrook and my Mom and Dad lived in San Diego. My wife and I would drive out to see them
during the holidays. I always remember saying to myself when we left Texas "well we made it half way!"

Supposedly back during the Depression, a hobo scrawled
on the inside wall of the box car in which he was riding:

"The sun has riz, the sun has set,
and still I is, in Texas yet."

Back in my early Air Force days, I drove to Sacramento,
CA through El Paso from Ft Worth (Carswell AFB) and in
the days prior to Interstates (old US 80, leaving town)
it was a LONGG drive, for sure, especially without air
conditioning!
