I'm not about to run Mobil 1 when this engine only gets about 400 miles
to the quart, so I'm looking for alternatives. Is that a qt. of Rislone
and 4 or 5 qts of oil, depending on how you you do it, or in addition to
the 4 or 5 qts of oil.

Using synthetic on an oil burner not only costs a lot but resutls in rock hard deposits around the parts that are letting the oil pass by such as valves. Regarding the question of ZDDP additive and engine break-in, one oil change interval is more than enough. After that it's only a myth and feel good thing.

While I appreciate your "real world" experience with the fleet motors, when someone tells me an oil does not have the lubricity it used to, I get concerned.  I had 2 flat tappet motors in a row wipe out in the first 1000 miles, I got roasted here on this forum on it then I found out about the ZDDP thing.  Call me cautious but after that I refuse to put myself, my customers or my motors in harms way by not fully addressing this issue.  Some have said after breakin it's no big deal.  If you would have had to face folks whos motor had failed you would also not want to hang your stress level on "it will probably be no problem after breakin".  Nope, not me and not my motors.  I feel doing everything you can to lessen your impact can only be good afterall, motors can easily fail for no aparent reason-- why give it any more reason.  Even with the roller cam design we use in our motors I still require an oil with increased ZDDP levels.  I don;t look
at that as a myth or feel good-- I see it as a required precaution.  We use Valvoline VR1 oils, there are others and cam shield added to lo lub oils raises the ZDDP levels.  If you are responsible, the only responsible thing is to protect your investment as much as possible,

I concur, Valvoline VR1 in my wife's '66 hot rod mustang and the coach. The 66 mustang straight 6 200CID was buit to the nines by a reputable Nascar Busch series engine builder. 10:1 compression Clay smith cam, triple Offenhauser... Edlebrock break in oil then valvoline VR1 or Brad Penn Grade 1 if you can find it. http://www.penngrade1.com/Default.aspx

I also use Valvoline VR-1 oil in my coach (20W-50) and have since the first oil change I did. It is not cheap at about six bucks a quart, but I see it as good insurance. Call it 'feel good' if you will, but it just makes sense to use good oil.

I have also gone with Manny's recommendation and use Mobil One transmission fluid in my transmission. It is even more costly than the premium motor oil, at about ten dollars per quart, but I don't see that as an issue if it will prolong the life of my tranny.

No problem but there is no bad oil out there on a commercial basis. There are enthusiasts here that will use products that are overpriced and marketed to make people scared and feel caring just like dog food that tastes great for people. If you want to be practical and smart, go to Walmart and get the cheapest oil that complies with the most demanding OEM current standards. The net is a mixture of car enthusiasts who obsess and people who just want to enjoy their coaches and see the country. Take yur pick.
