Hello All,
I was in AutoZone and saw some diesel oil on sale really cheap $12.95/5+ quarts. it was:
Mobil/1 gal. 15W-40 Delvac 1300 Super diesel engine oil
Is this the correct oil to use with the additive for flat tapped engines?
If it is, this is the time to stock up to go with you case of Wix filters.
thanks in advance,
Todd

I just read through the presentation from Gene Bott on "Our GMC Motorhome
Flat Tappet Motor Oil Problem" presented at the his 2013 Spring Rally.
At the very bottom of the article he list acceptable oils and the #6 item
was:
6. Oils for diesels that do not have a cleaner exhaust API starburst
symbol.
Yes the diesels would be ok if it didn't have the API starburst symbol

What is the API designator? SN CJ-4? See if you can get the actual specs on the PPM Zinc and phosphorus so you can determine how much to add. If you just add blindly you can go too high which causes metal spauling. I have been using Rotela 5w-40 full synthetic blue jug which was CI-4. No longer made so now its CJ-4. Lower ZDDP for the urea cat diesels. They did add other modifiers and Shell says it's better than the CI-4 for scuffing. We shall see.

Bruce I don't have that hand out but the API starburst has been around for years as a standard for quality which means you WOULD want it. I am guessing what he doesn't want is CI-4 for clean Diesels.

Look for a service rating of 'SJ' for gasoline engines. Some oils have been dual rated for both gasoline (S? ie SJ)and diesel (C? ie CI)I've been told that too much zinc was take out of the oils that are rated CJ-4.

There isn't. Unless you are breaking in a new engine, any oil on the market today will be more than adequate. If you are breaking in a new engine or have replaced the cam, a ZDDP additive is advisable.

SJ won't be found unless you find an abandoned store from a decade ago. It is now up to letters SN for gas engines. In short if you are broken in, have a fairly non aggressive cam ramp profile and don't run Godzilla valve spring pressures, life will go on. My only comment is that in cold weather after long sitting the 15w is a bit heavy. I want oil up to the parts as fast as possible.

Hi John
I have been using Accel brand 10W40 I get from WalMart since I rebuilt my engine 5 years ago and change it every 3000Miles no problems even though this is the cheapest oil they stock last time I bought some it was 2.14/qt. This oil is rated "SF NOT FOR USE IN ENGINES MADE AFTER 1988" JimB contacted the MAnufacturer a couple of years ago to get the data sheet if you are interested in the ZDDP content IIRC it was over 1300PPM

Delo 400 straight 40w is what I use. It is NOT Delo 400LE. The last I checked it had over 1300 ppm of zddp and was SJ rated. The Chevron site says:
Quote: | Delo 400 SAE 10W, 20, 30, 40, 50
Delo 400 heavy-duty motor oils are mixed fleet engine oils recommended for older four-stroke diesel and gasoline engines. Formulated with advanced additive technology, they provide excellent control of deposits and sludge, minimizing oil consumption and optimizing engine overhaul intervals.

It is getting harder to find. The last I got was from an independent NAPA store.

SF was the highpoint for ZDDP. Circa 1987. You can find small engine oil in SJ in the USA but usually straight weights and not sure it's right for us. Another route is the Brad Penn or Hemmings type stuff for collector vehicles, though not cheap. I'm not a tribologist, but the way I understand it the zddp decrease has been accompanied by increases in other newer EP additives to compensate. Oddy the API says SM and SN are backwards compatible and does not say "do not use in non roller cam engines". I think there is some piece of mind of starting at 1300 PPM min, though a lot of this is unnecessary worry. I do think that the residual ZDDP may offer some seconds of protection at startup, which could be 6 mo interval, until oil film is redistributed. And "they" say most wear is at startup.

Lucas Oil has a relatively new oil blend with ZDPP that is strictly for older engines. It is called Classic and Hot Rod and is available in at least two viscosities. I use it in my GMC Coach as well the 74 Buick Estate Wagon and the 66 El Camino. It doesn't seem to want to seep or leak and it is not terribly expensive.

Thanks Chuck. Looks like it's available from any O'Reillys though they may need to order it. Looked at the bottle and it's API is SL for gasoline engines. CF for diesel. $4.79qt/ $17.99 gal

Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 is a extra-high performance, diesel engine oil that helps extend engine life in the most severe on- and off-highway applications while delivering outstanding performance. It meet or exceed the requirements of the API CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS and CH-4 service categories as well as key original equipment manufacturer requirements.
-Outstanding engine efficiency, long engine life and long oil life
-Reduced low-temperature sludge build-up and high-temperature deposits
-Lower oil costs due to less make-up oil during operation
-Faster oil flow and reduced wear during engine start-up in low temperatures
