Thanks Tom P. for the advice on quality screwdrivers. A local mom and pop store sells them. I was to place an order with them but they never got back with me so I bought today at Home Depot. I hate cheap tools and rarely buy tools from cheap sources, unless I only need to use them occasionally. Phillips heads, I hate anyway. Our windows in the GMC are in with 40 year old phillip head screws. Broke a couple of, what I thought were decent tools, getting the window out at Dothan. May use my impact driver on the rest of the windows.

I had good luck using my Makita reversible drill with a new extended Phillips head bit. Keeping some pressure on the fastener seems to help as well before they strip out.
I do sometimes buy cheap tools, but like to get good ones for those I often use ( love my Snap-On 13mm wrench). Wish the pocketbook would let me only buy the best, but the CFO says the kids have to be paid for as well!

Just stay away from Snap-off screwdrivers. Year ago we changed our corporate contract from Excelite to snap-off for hand tools. The wrenches were great but we sent back so many broken screwdrivers that Snap-on starting sending replacement blades with instructions to just knock out the old blade from the handles. They did not even want to see the broken ones back. I probably still have a few of those replacement blades stuffed away somewhere. We all carried at least 2 replacement blades for each size screwdriver.

Bondhus Allen Wrench set.
for 24 years I have been using this stuff in my work. Best fasteners you can use. I use them whenever I can on my hobby stuff.
I hate Snapon tools. Wrenches are too sharp edged.
Klein tools rock, but then I am an electrician by trade, goes with the trade.

Like George said, keeping pressure on the driver to keep the bit into the screw is the trick, whatever head type the head is.

Dan,
I have good screwdrivers too, but what I keep around and use a lot are driver handles for a 1/4 hex drive and then I buy boxes of #2 philips points. That way: A - you can select for the best quality point, and B - when it inevitably looses its edges and starts to skip out, you throw it away. You now have a new sharp #2 philips point for 49c.
The kind that store the points in the handle are great. But them with no points at a flea market for 1$. Then put two or three new points in it.

AND (as I learned whilst I was employed as an avionics tech)
the longer the screwdriver shaft, the easier it is to keep the
blade centered in line with the screw. The longer shaft means
that any horizontal displacement from on-center, the smaller
the angular displacement at the screw head!

OK I got to put my 2 cents in here, after 35 working on large airplanes, a few tricks on phillips screws, if they don't come out easily stop and do the following , first make sure the screw head is clean you may even need to use a dental pick and small wire brush, then apply a small dab of lapping compound on bit, and as mentioned earlier a longer screwdriver shaft makes this easier, also try a hammer blow on screwdriver handle will trying to turn. I've had one of those for years. On the coach, I think I'd have someone hold a dolly bar on the other side of the wall where the screw is located before I smacked it.

Here at the house, I have a hammer blow impact wrench to use on the rest of the windows. I bought it when working on and restoring old motorcycles. A must. It will knock anything loose.
I showed Teri my Klien set after purchase. Told where I hid it, and asked her to never loan it out. :d

Ken B., when I started at IBM in 1967, in the OPD manufacturing plant in Toronto we had a tool crib that used to supply tools to IBM C.E.s I think only in Canada. Your saying Excelite, reminded me of the brand name on the screw drivers way back them. Funny how the brain can store some trivial stuff. I think that same tool crip(always either attended or locked) also supplied the tools to the typewriter manufacturing lines in the same building.
Selectrics, Model Ds and a few other strange things like 767.

Do not mention Selectrics. They tried to get me to fix those things once. They even sent me to school for two weeks. After two weeks the Selectric I was suppose to be building and making run still did not work. They sent me home anyway. Unfortunately there was no grade at the end so they still expected me to take selectric calls. I probably took 4 or 5 Selectric calls in my life time.
The CE force in Canada was run as a completely separate operation but occasionally we wandered across the border in both directions. The biggest problem was the Canadian customs asking why we were carrying tools. We has to say we were on vacation and the tools were in case my car broke down. If we flew in we did not bring tools northbound. The US customs did not care one way or the other.

Then there's the JIS Cross point screwdriver that Looks like a phillips but is NOT. They are flat bottomed, no point, so you usually strip the heads with a phillips. Japanese electronics all have this crap in them. Ever wondered why the heads stripped in Japanese stuff? Now you Know...
I have one of these drivers...
Interesting talk about IBM. In the early 1990's, I was an on-site Field Service Engineer in Burlington Vermont supporting the equipment the company I worked for sold to IBM. I just came in from my shop after working on one of those very same machines. I refurbish and resell them now. 24 years of working on the same gear. This one is going to the Czech Republic in June. Looking forward to that trip.

Usually the treat me just great, but NEVER tell them you are going in to work. As long as you are a tourist with no hand guns they treat me just great. They want me to spend my money there.
We complain about the US customs coming back home. I pulled up one time with a Canadian friend riding shot gun. They questioned the hell out of me and demanded some id. Then they asked my Canadian friend one question "Where are you from?" He said only one word "Brandon". They waved us through.
