I got a present today, I pulled in the driveway today and found 2 brand new Dometic Roof air conditioners, one to replace the crusty old Mark IV coleman and one to add to the back, in preparations for "Oliver" to visit its namesake (CanyonLands)

I know many put the roof air in the front hole from the middle, but is there any discernible benefit to having it a few feet forward? weight and balance? wind noise? visual appeal? room for roof pod?

inquiring minds want to know

I think the main reason to do it is that it will cool the cab area significantly better. We all love our huge GMC windscreens, but it lets in a lot of heat during the day, and that says nothing of sitting on top of that hot hunk of metal known as the engine. Of course, we're a southern coach, so we need every bit of heat mitigation we can get down here!

Sean,

I think the main reason for putting one of the ACs in the front hole (where most of us have a fan/vent) is to get more cooling up front while driving with the generator and roof air on. I believe some, or most, Royales were set up that way.

You bet! A wife who buys gifts for your other woman. I think GMCs are female because all the gifts are expensive. P.S. My wife paid for my GMC.
Back to A/C question. The OEM A/C position has the correct size hole in the roof and additional structural members to support the A/C. It is also pre-wired for 110 AC.
I don't remember any moved more forward, but I'm sure that someone has done so. You would have to reinforce the roof to support the extra weight of the A/C, and run power to that position. The vent support may be enough to support he A/C, but I don't know the answer to that little problem.
Plenty of GMCs with two A/C's and a roof pod.

Tom,

All the holes are 14" square. According to the assembly manual and other documentation, there is no difference in structure between any of the three roof vent framing. I could not find anything that indicated that the forward access is wired.

And, maybe some wives buy things for the coach, but mine likes to drive and cook (at separate times).

I am fairly sure the FRAMING around all the holes is the standard 14" square, but from the vents I have from a GM upfitted post 1975 coach, the actual hole in the skin might be less than that.

I know this because the vents I have will not fill the holes in my 1973. (IIRC, It is mostly the rounded corners that are the problem.)

If you want to move the AC to the front hole, you'll need to extend the power cable to match. I would, if I had two AC units. and a 26 foot coach.

Suppose with that kind of thinking, my wife is in the running for "best wife in the world" for putting up with it! (I think she likes me being to busy/broke to afford a girl-friend or mistress.)

But buying presents (unasked) for the GMC... I'd have to agree with Sean. Sounds like a keeper!

I believe I have the best Bride & Wife.

Last summer Paula and I got married (2nd time for both of us) at her parent's cottage. We had 5 GMC's at the wedding plus our own which we stayed in night before and night after.

Several weeks later we then left for our honeymoon. We did 4 GMC rallies in just over 2 weeks.

I don't think anyone can top that!! Cool
