Fay,
If I remember correctly, all the electrical switching for ignition is located down on the lower steering column. The ignition switch only operates a rod that actuates a switch on the lower column. The only reason to change the switch is if it is frozen and won't turn.

Under the steering wheel, in the column, there is a rod that moves up and down with the key. Mine was corroded and would not move. I poured penetrating oil down it and it came free.
