Friend found and bought coach Friday - drove it home, parked it and turned
it off. Then tried to start it again to move it to a safer location -
moments after turning it off. Will not startT.Doesn't even try to
crank. Headlights will not come on. tested batteries and voltages are good.
Using bat switch doesn't help. Tried safety neutral switch fix and that did
not help. Coach is a 1973. Has had a HEI distrubutor installed. Any help
greatly appreciated. She is starting to freak out and don't want to lose a
new member of the cult just after she joined! We will be going to see if we
can help in the morning.

If the headlights don't come on, it is likely a loose or corroded cable. Often the ground side gets neglected more than the hot side.

Look for a corroded or loose battery cable. If the coach has had 'clamp on' style ends added to the existing cables, replace the cables now, entirely, with ones with the correct ends on them. Clamp - ons are only a device to get home when an original connector fails.

Sounds like a busted fusible link.
Symptoms fit our experience with that.

Most definatley the molex plug on the starter harness.Yes the one with the fuseable link.Sometimes that wire hits the exhaust manifold and burns quick. Not too too bad! When you get the headlight to light then it should kick right off!

Ok,
batteries are good, have 12 plus volts going to starter and when tested
from hot starter wire to ground. However, when try to spark across the
starter terminal, get no sparks, nada. So thinking still fusible link
(where) or bad starter?

We see no fusible link in the starter circuit. Dose it exist on a 1973
coach and if so, where?
Thanks,
Fay

Well, it still isn't starting. Still have good power going to the starter
(which tested fine), but no power to speak of when jumping from the hot
lead of the starter to ground - just itty bitty sparks. Nothing when try to
start the engine. Engine ground looks good, frame ground looks good. Still
up a creek.

I'd probably get some good jumper cables and go directly to the starter and an engine ground point, then short the solenoid with a screwdriver. If it doesn't turn over, your starter is bad. If it does, I'd disconnect the battery cables and attach the jumper cables directly to the engine battery turn the key. If it turns over, your battery cables/ground are bad, if not, short the solenoid. If it turns over, you have a problem in the ignition wiring that is not triggering the solenoid.
Early on, it was mentioned that the headlights did not work. Is that still the case?
One thing that has gotten me a few times is a cable that will carry voltage but not enough amps to do anything. The jumper cable test will determine the condition of the battery cables.

Kerry,
Direct to starter gets nothing, but a bit better spark. Starter passed test
at local shop, but...
Headlights and horn do not work. Gen light and brake light come on when key
is turned.
We were wondering also about the cables carrying voltage, but not amps,

Removed cable from starter and grounded it. There were no big sparks, yet
meters at 12.5 plus volts. Amps are going somewhere. So, replace battery
cables and or battery?
