Saturday's project was to remove a bunch of heavy parts...
No sense in attaching all those pretty, new parts to this rusty, gray
mass. Powdercoat or good paint to follow - don't know whichjust yet.

Wow Kelvin, when you said you removed a bunch of parts, you were being pretty literal! Laughing

Are you planning on doing the Bogie pins while you are at it?

We didn't take mine down past removing the old brakes but did change all my brake lines and put in a new P30 MC. Doing all that took longer than installing the Manny Brakes themselves. It would have been much worse but Ken Henderson had a pressure bleeder which was a huge time saver.

We hit the bogie arms with a wire brush, I opted for just some Rustoleum engine paint sprayed over the because I wanted something that dried quick. If I had time, I would have used POR15 or similar.

Uhhh, Kelvin, you kinda got carried away! 'Tain't necessary to pull
EVERYTHING to install Manny Brakes! :-)

We'll be starting on mine this afternoon but not going down any further
than the spindles.

How are your pins & bushings? I'm almost afraid to check mine. I did a
poor job of replacing them in '98 and they've had lots of chance to wear
since then.

I can't see every being down to this level again. Might as well get it
done now.

There is no abnormal tire wear. The coach goes down the road with two
fingers on the steering wheel. There is a little play but it's not
much. The grease I found in the holes was pretty nice.

I think we're good to go on pins. This is a '73 so who knows when they
were replaced via recall.

I'll be installing a new OEM MC and gutting the combination valve.
Already own one of Jim Hupy's pressure bleeders.

Going to spend the day cleaning the parts. I'll drag an arm and bogie
box to a couple of powdercoating shops tomorrow to get estimates. If
it's not outrageous we'll go that way. If it's more than I can stomach
then I'll paint it with something good.

I'd love to be installing the brakes today but GMCs are indeed Pandora's
Box on wheels.

Powder coating is the way to go.
$40 to $50 each for the bogies is a guess. I would sand blast them first.

If I can get this done for $200-250 I'll be happy. Would surprise me if
it's that little, however...

Kelvin, do you know the origin of your wheels? I have the same thing and was
wondering how to get replacement hubcaps.

The wheels? They're just 16.5" radial wheels.
Or are you talking about the wheel covers? I have that info somewhere...

Thanks, are the hubcaps 2 piece, with a inner cage that bolts on under the
lug-nuts and the hub cap fits over that cage?

Well... three piece, if you count the cover itself. But yes... the hub
cap snaps over a cage in the middle.

I actually drilled and tapped the wheels for a couple 10-32 screws to
hold main cover and cage centered on the wheel. Trying to install all
the pieces using just the lug nuts was less than fun. Easy to get the
covers off-center and then your wheels "wobble" as you go down the road.
