Les,
It would help it you would tell us where you are located at? The Shasta area is a big area. You're no more than 300 miles to Jim K shop. That is the place to get the work done. You don't save any money putting a cheap engine in the coach. Jim has them in the 3500 dollar range give or take. Best to bit the bullet and take the tow down. You know it will be done correctly! Why a cheap rebuild? Do you want to do it two, maybe three times more?
Buy the best and be done with it for as long as you own your coach. I will
guarantee you there is no such thing as a cheap rebuild............that
will last for very long.

...all-input would be appreciated. ...
Labor is going to cost about $2400. Long block from Jim K is going to be $3400 - $3600. The $700 - $1000 to get from where you are to Applied GMC in Newark, CA is not that much additional cost for a RELIABLE NEW engine, installed, with warranty.
Sorry that the worst thing that could happen occurred so far from home. If you plan to keep your GMC for a long time to come, the new engine will give you some piece of mind in that it should never happen again.

While most likely not what you are looking for, I used a mobile mechanic in that area. I got his card at a NAPA in Weed. I understand he has cards up at all the auto parts stores in the area. He might know of a facility to use to swap a motor.

That said, Here is a good rule of thumb:

If you plan on keeping your coach, contact Jim (K,B or H, even Migel an Honorary "Jim") for a good motor. Twisted Evil

... you know what I mean, do it right from someone who "knows" what kind of motor a GMC needs. You save money in the long run.

I got mine flat bedded to Manny's (190 miles) for $600, for reference. Got it on and off so easily I was amazed.

Les has very limited internet access there. He has good faith in the shop where he is. One question he has is what the procedure is for removing the engine from below rather than above. I seem to recall there was a detailed procedure on line. He may consider leaving the coach there while he locates an engine.
