As most of you know, In the early days of GMC Motorhomes, GM had Gemini
Corporation of Mt. Clemens, Michigan design and build all of the furniture
and all the modules in '73 and '74 motorhome. When GMC cancelled that
contract and moved production in house, Gemini had a garage sale to sell off
all the unused parts and materials. My neighbor, who owned a '73 Canyon
Lands at the time, got wind of the sale from one of his patients. He went
over to the Gemini facility and purchased sight unseen the last remaining
stock of a flexible laminate material that was used to make the particle
board cabinets and modules look like real wood. When it came time to get
his order from the warehouse he was surprised when the Gemini guy said,
something like this, "Hey Joe you're going to need to get the forklift for
this guy's stuff". My neighbor expected the "stuff" to be just 2 small
rolls of material that he could carry to his car. Instead they brought out
huge 2 rolls, each weighing about 500 lbs. He had to go and borrow a pickup
truck to get the rolls home. He used part of it to wall paper his garage,
wallpapered a couple of his relatives and friends garages plus he did his
recreation room. I think he even wallpapers some rooms in his office. I
even got some to cover some plywood parts I made for my Palm Beach to match
the wood grain it has. All of this only used up about half of a roll. He
still had that and full roll left when he died a few years ago. His
grandson, who moved into his Grandpa's house, was going to dump it all.
When I saw him struggling to roll it out to the street, I said I'll take
it. Now I am the owner of the world's supply of what Gemini used to make
particle board look like real wood.

Does anyone need any? For the price of shipping & handling I'd be willing
to give some away. I have more than enough for to last me the rest of my
life.

Sorry the color is a dark.

I don't know if they did anything in white from the factory, either Gemini or GM Truck & Coach. Maybe other outfitters did.

1973 & 74 interiors used two different wood tones:

Teakwood = Canyonlands, Painted Desert & Glacier

Birch = Sequoia

Richard,

Is this the same wood grain laminate color used in the '76 Eleganza?

It would have made sense that he bought the color that matched his Canyon Lands. That color was a close match to my Palm Beach. It looks like they used several different dark simulated wood colors over the years of production.

I have to figure out how to unroll pieces. Right now they are laying on the floor in my garage. My neighbor had a gizmo setup to unroll the material as he needed it. That gizmo got tossed by the grandson. The grandson also ended up giving the coach away to one of his wife's relatives and all the neighbors GMC stuff either was tossed, or went with the coach. Fortunately, I rescued the laminate, a NOS freshwater tank and a pair of good exhaust manifolds before it hit the trash. All stuff that I can use.

It was sad to see the coach go, since it was always there in his garage since we moved in 35 years ago. He was the one that got us into this crazy world of GMCs.

Yes, I still have two very big and heavy rolls laying on the floor of my garage. They are 4' wide and about 2' in diameter and way too heavy for one person to lift. Which means the issue I'm facing is how to unroll it and then package it to ship. This is as it turns out is easier said than done. I'll get something figured out in a couple of weeks.

Hi Richard, I'm interested too. I have 74 Canyon lands and was just going to buy closely matched Formica sheets for 2 kitchen cabs and rehab of fridge area I'm doing.

I was thinking some "Hughes or Sonatube" used to form concrete posts. It's available at both blue and orange home hells. Will check price later but would need to know how much it could be bent while rolled to determine dia. of tube. Some screws run in outside of interior roll would hold things in place. UPS will take up to 150 lbs and 165" in length

Perhaps before you ship anything snip an inch or two off the roll to create some chips to mail to colorblind and or confused folks.

Thanks

I'm still planning on going to the work rally, that is if the weather forecast is OK and if I get my coach running. If so, I'll bring samples.

I've come to realize that distributing this stuff is going to be a hassle to do it for nothing. I have to come up with a way to handle the material (each roll weighs way more than I can lift), cut it to length, roll it up and then ship it. I'm also sending out samples. Therefore, reluctantly (wife is demanding) that I charge something for the stuff if I am going to continue to be the curator of the world's supply of GMC Motorhome NOS OEM flexible wood grained laminate material used by Gemini in 1973 and 1974. SHE is concerned that this is going to take time from my "honey do list".

It comes 48" wide by however long. It is subject to kinking and my experience is that it can't be folded. It has to be put on a roll or it can be ruined. I found that out the hard way, but the world's supply was next door to me at the time and I was able to get more.

It's occurred to me (wife again or was it the cat?) that someone could email me and only want a 2' long piece and I'd spend an hour unrolling it, then rolling it on to a 4'+ long tube, packing that into another 4'+ tube, labeling and finally running it to UPS or the post office.

We've decided that we should charge a little and put that money toward our always ongoing motorhome renovations. That is what other guys are doing with their offerings.

I'm thinking something like $15/yard plus shipping expense with a minimum of 2 or 3 yards or something like that. I would add more to an order at no charge to allow for practice laminating. I messed up the first time I tried it and needed more.

I really don't expect too many people to want his stuff since it looks so 1970's. But then again, I have it in my coach and like it.

So hopefully this works for the few that want this material.
