Asked earlier about a location to mount an oil temp gauge sensor, someone replied to tap the oil cooler adapter.
I'd rather not do that, what about a tee on one of the oil cooler lines? Would it be best to locate it closer to the engine or the radiator? I have replacement oil lines on and had to use 90 deg fittings at the adapter to clear the headers, and have had no problem with leaks. Would a tee work there or where the line connects to the radiator. Also upper or lower line? Not sure which is in or out. Thanks

The top hose to the radiator's oil cooler is the one from the engine to the cooler.

What Emery said. If I was wanting to know the temp of the oil, I think I would read the hot line. That will tell you what temp it is as it exits the engine, not after it is cooled and on its way back.

So instead of a simple tap with only one potential leak point, you would rather add three potential leak points on a very important piece of engine real estate?
I would not choose this method, because J.R.'s oil lines are bullet proof. That is why we have these discussions. It is extremely interesting to find others solutions to common problems. JMHO.

After looking it over, The tap may be the best way to go. Putting together a tee in the line would actually have more than 6 leak points since no one makes an exact tee with all the different threads. Thanks for the advice.

Dan,

Why should you care about the temp of the oil exiting the motor? The
important thing is what it is entering the motor.
If your cooler is crudded up and not cooling the oil, you would want to
know. JMHO

How would you know what temp the oil is, hot or cold, whether the cooler is working or not. What you are saying is, you need one guage for the oil going out of the engine and one for the oil coming out of the cooler, in order to compare.

Harry,

The simple fact is that a problem inside the engine that may indicate a problem will be reflected in the temperature of lube oil return to the pan. It the system cooler is adequate, it will be able hide this rise for some time.

On the same hand, if the cooler is not adequate to the task, the entire system temperature will rise and indicate the fact.

Gary, you are "clouding" the issue. Very Happy The guy wants to know what his oil temp is. Heck, I could care less myself. Now, on the tranny, I do monitor incoming and outgoing. Manny says don't, but I do. My trans fluid runs along at same temp as engine coolant until I go up a grade, long one. The pan temp rarely comes off the 130 degree lower temp peg of the gauge.
So Gary, I don't care. You could not be at Dothan to harrass me so you do it here. I have to admit, I did miss you at the convention and hope you two can be at Branson.
So, depends on what you want measured as to where the sensor goes. I think we all agree on that.

Well, we are off topic but anyone with a good solar system will have an amp meter that will read in and out. Have to have something along that line to accurately understand what is going on with your house batteries. A voltmeter alone is simply not telling you much. Can't really dry camp for any length of time with only a voltmeter. Damage to your "fuel system" otherwise known as house batteries, will be caused.
I still say if I wanted a reading on my oil temperature I would want to know what the temp was at its hottest. However, that is just my thinking. No claims of being correct. I am known to run two coolers.

And I'll go you one better.  If I add oil temp, I won't add it as a tee, because the sensor is in the 'dead end' of the tee, which slows response.  I want it in the actual flow.  I'm much more interested in its behavior than in absolute value anyway.

Speaking of using a Tee - here's another reason not to.

I put a Tee on the adapter where the oil goes into the line for the cooler. It would show no temps, then once it got hot it wuld just keeep getting hotter and hotter - over 300 degrees.

Stupid me - I keep adding coolers. Lots of coolers.

To cut to the answer - the sender was getting hot from the headers it was right underneath. Had nothing to do with oil temps.

"Most" of the coolers have been removed.

Now Ken. You know better. After the last engine failure I blocked the aluminum radiator and am just using one external cooler now. Seems to be fine. Someday I will get the cooler in the radiator cleaned and then I will once again have two coolers.
If you can get budwieser past Teri and into one of my coolers, go for it. Very Happy
