I took the carb off today to clean a sticky float. I looked for the crack that everyone speaks about and sure enough, there is a crack between the secondaries. It is a hairline crack that goes from top to bottom.
What else should I look for to see if this is a problem? It ran well except for the flooding problem. Looks like the PO did not put the spring in the filter so it was just rattling around not filtering anything.
Thanks all for all the help...

Daryn,

The vertical cracks between the throats are nothing to worry about. It's
those in the bottom, leading into the camshaft valley that you have to
worry about.

can the end of the crack be drilled to prevent it from going any further? Otherwise isn't it going to eventually go all the way through?

Jerrod,

I don't know. But I THINK those cracks are basically independent of the
bad floor cracks. They're both doubtless due to the big exhaust crossover,
but I think the bottom cracks occur whether or not there are throat cracks.
But others here have more experience with them than I do.

I have several 455 cast iron manifolds that are cracked. The valley side of
the manifolds are all extensively cobweb cracked before cracks appear in
the floor of the inlet tract. I would hazard a guess that if the floor of
the intake passages is cracked, that the valley is leaking.

Thanks guys, I also wonder if there is a way to stop it from getting worse. I guess the only way is to block the crossover.
Thanks again...

Blocking the cross over is only a 3 or 4 hour job and should be done whether or not the floor is cracked. If the floor is cracked then filling the manifold crossover or replacement is the only answer along with blocking the crossover.

Has anyone been brave enough to try that Hardblock filler for the manifold crossover?
