Remove the fender liner and you can see/work in that area easily.

I installed a jack-knife sofa that runs from the refrigerator to the edge of the
2nd step. Didn't have to notch a thing. What kind of jack knife sofa are you
installing???

Neither was mine, but I changed the way the jack knife mounts were mounted to
the sofa. My coach is still in winter storage, when I pick it up (within the
next week) I can take some pictures of what I did.

If you guys keep messing with the step, you are going to make the trolls
that live under there angry. You all know that it is never a good thing to
have angry trolls any where near a GMC. (very big grin)

Actually, And this is top secret, not to be repeated, MURPHY is in charge
of trolls, gremlins, tribbles, and all other troublecausers, that
inhabit Gmc's. As a matter of fact, one of those buggers screwed me up
yesterday. I was giving ignition timing procedures to a young Gmc owner by
telephone last night and when he put the timing light on # 1 cylinder, the
timing marks were no where to be seen. Turns out, the points distributor
had been replaced with a Paterson ignition, and the troll that installed
it, put it in 180 degrees out, then rewired the secondary wires to
compensate. Now, 6 has become 1. Try figuring that one out sitting in your
favorite recliner after happy hour and dinner. Not my most productive time
of day.
But this morning, clearer heads prevailed, and we have beaten Murphy and
his band of merry pranksters once again. Damn, I love working on this old
STUFF.

Ahhhhhhhhh, besides the trolls & gremlins, sounds like Mr. Rube Goldberg also
stepped in to help. Sounds logical to me, put the dist in 180 off....so switch
all the wires.....maybe he could have just removed the timing chain and rotated
the cam 180 too !
