OK. I was working on my engine, had the intake off to block the cross over. I left the engine hatch up, and a critter came in and ate up a bit of my dinette seat.

Now I do not have the best interior... it is not original, but could use some updating.

question now, is it got turned into the insurance company now, and I am instructed to get some estimates on repair. obviously it cannot be matched.

has anybody had their original flexsteel style interior re-done professionally? and have an idea of what that might cost? or a shop that i could get that is familiar with the interior give me a quote to give to the insurance company?

I have a 75 palm beach. davo couch/bunk, dinette up front. and the two bench seats that come together in the rear for a bed.

Cats love squirrels. LOL
Too bad about the damage. My biggest problems are mud daubbers, even into the air intake horn for the air cleaner. A mother-nature made choke.

Dang it Jon. You did not expect to get a serious answer when you put this up on the net, did ya? I would put a camera in there, leave the hatch open, and make sure I killed the correct critter for supper.
Still think you need to be planning to meet us in Effingham the first weekend in June. Let the wife entertain her own family.

Jon, I had an estimate of around $2000 including new foam for a complete
steelcase palm beach but that was several years ago. I ended up doing it
myself. Did I mention how much I hate squirrels? I believe I ended up with
about $1000 in total costs to do it myself. I probably had $10,000 in
boat/rv/home/barn/stuff damage from squirrels in just one summer if I had
to pay for someone else for labor.

See http://teamteets.com/gmc/upholstery.html

I will be adding some dimensions I just found from planning to that page.

Mike,

Didn't you say, in hindsight, that those upholsterer's really do earn their pay?

Absolutely they do! It is surprisingly strenuous work and I actually enjoy
really hard work! If I had it to do all over again, I would definitely do
it myself again for the same reasons I did it the first time. I learned a
lot and I am more than happy in the final product. But, if considering it
yourself, do it because you want to do the work, not because you think you
will save a bunch of money or you can do it quicker.

Thanks Mike. I book marked your page finally. I have been over it before, and do not understand my mental block of not remembering you walked the walk before.

RV guy stopped by and is going to get me some estimates for the insurance people. will see how that all goes, and decide who is doing the upholstry work, my wife and mother-in-law. or a professional. If we do it ourselves, I am guessing the dinette, and davo will be done this spring. rear couches next year.

I am usually one to do the work myself so I learn, and can be proud of what i do. However these days, time is flying by, and I just am finding myself involved in too many projects myself.

as far as catching the squirrel. I tried that a few years ago, and I trapped a squirrels every day for two weeks. and never ran out. I am not one to eat squirrels... so i gave up. I bet I would never run out of squirrel's around here.

I also will wait to see what happens with the insurance. The squirrel might be my new best friend.

Jon,
You may be right about the rodents being your best friend. I used to eat them but stopped shooting them when I no longer had a taste for them. Believe it or not, I have been through auto trim school. Used to sew a straight seam.

Squirrels are not your friends! One made a home separately in both my
regular vehicles which only caused about a grand replacing wiring
harnesses and insulation under the hoods since Christmas. Eat em as
fast as you can so they don't come back and haunt you. If I ever
catch my varmint, he'll be nailed to a tree back in squirrel country
behind the house as a warning.

Squirrels are a PITA! Ever seen one chew the black plastic bumper cover on a chevy truck? Still not sure why the insurance lady was laughing.

At this point, after years of experimentation, I am winning the war with
squirrels. Here is how if you don't want a cat:

Find their nests, there are at least two for each squirrel. Collect and
dispose of the nest and all nest material. They find them by smell and
will return to the location repeatedly even if you scatter it.

Get rid of their food source. Rake up nuts in the fall. If seems crazy
but you must do it. If you have pine trees, collect the pine cones as well.

Once they get into a building, you must use a kill trap. They will eat
through anything to return back inside building, even if you close off
their access. You cannot relocate them as they will die anyway, and
often aggressively attack the squirrels in that location. They will travel
over 5 miles to return.

The best traps are the black plastic clamp type, Bell T Rex rat traps.
Peanut butter works best.

How about chipmunks? I am actually not sure if it was a chipmunk, or squirrel that did the damage.

My problem, is I live in town of 65,000 + people. in a neighborhood, that is full of big oak trees. I have 7 oaks just on my 1/2 acre lot. (had 8, but cut one down last year). alot of the neighbors are the same. and one of the neighbors down the block, I know feeds the stupid things. I am also less then a mile from the mississippi river, and that is very wooded. so I do not think I can rid my yard of squirrels. at least without being arrested anyway.

I can see the squirrels nests, but I am not sure if I brought a bucket truck home from work, I could reach them up in those oaks.

I do not think the squirrels found food in the gmc, but just ate a bit of the seat.

It was probably Squirrels, We have had all three (mice, squirrels and chipmunks) over the years get in our various coachs..... squirrels being the only ones that ate the upholstery, and doing the most damage. How we knew it was a squirrel was because it made a nice bed up of pinecones and driverseat pieces about a foot deep under the bathtub, leaving a impression of where it slept.....perfect outline of a squirrel.... and phewwwww did it stink.....

Jon, I too have a difficult lot. Around 200 trees from scrubs to 100 yr
old hickory with woods a stream adjacent. I am a large lot in the middle
subdivisions of manicured lawns. All wildlife come to my house daily to
escape the grind of their day jobs pestering small cats and dogs. You
can't eliminate the squirrels but you can make it the neighbors lots more
attractive :-) I don't worry about the nests in the trees, just the ones
on the ground, around the house and barn, and under the deck. Each
squirrel will need at least two nests, or food stores to feel safe. Just
get rid of as many as possible.

are we talking red or gray squirrels?

We have Gray around here and they seem pretty benign, well except for burrying things in the grass.

They are fat, probably good eating since both the wife and neighbor feed the lil guys.

I WILL shoot red squirrels on sight

Gray's tend to stay away from people stuff... It is the evil red that is
the enemy of the GMCer. I read somewhere, but can't find the reference,
that red squirrels would be the single largest natural disaster nearly
every year if measured in dollars to repair damage.

I did not really know that. I had one in my live trap last year.

looks like I am going to trap him again and make sure he is gone for good. Mostly have brown squirrels around, but now that I have done the research, I know there are just a few red ones here.

I did get a call back from a RV guy here in town, that started his own repair business after working for a huge RV place.

he said $1800 labor on the upholstery job for all the seats minus the captains chairs.

but he also told me $700 labor to install carpet.(high?)

He is going to give me the numbers formally yet for me to go to the insurance company with.
