Chevy also had a 400 small block with the same water jacket set up. Never seemed to be a problem there. It was a engine that was used in a lot of hard racing, thus lots of heat. There is a lot of water in that area. And were their together. It's fairly small. Bob Dunahugh

What most of the engine builders do not like about siamese cylinders is the
fact that in most circumstances, it is a limiting factor in how large an
overbore you can accomplish. Engines that have evenly spaced cylinders can
USUALLY be over bored and sleeved, but the back to back design of a siamese
prohibits sleeves unless you mill two flat sides on adjoining sleeves. If
you do this, they don't stay round and straight in high horsepower engines.
Probably why Joe M. did not like them. But, that said, the oversquare
design of the 403 makes it a favorite of mine, and Migel and several
others, in motorhomes.

I agree Jim. When I built my 352 stroker (400 w/Ford rods) we sonic tested
6 blocks before we found a 400 we could bore to .030 over. I have built
many 400's with no cooling issues. Just have to remember those steam holes
in the aftermarket heads.
