A wrench is what I do to my back due to sudden or difficult twisting or pulling.  In the not too distant future I expect to be removing and replacing my 455 half ton of fun engine.  I will need an A frame with a rail setup or similar devise to lift the engine and move it to near the coach door.  Does anyone have a design for one such devise?  I have been thinking that a simple frame could lift it out, I could then put plywood beneath the engine over the access hole and then using other metal or wood, slide the beast down several pieces of plywood or metal toward the door where it could be lifted out with the traditional cherry picker type of devise. 


Two queries here:

1. How do I make or borrow the frame with a rail to move the motor to the door area?

2.  Would dropping the engine to a platform and sliding it to the door work?  The replacement process of lifting the motor to the cab area could be a bit wrenching!

Doug, I think there will be two of those engine lifts that you are referring to for sale at the gmcws rally swap meet on Wednesday. These, if I am correct, will lift it up and then allow you to slide it back to the doorway and then out.

I'm ready. All packed and would sure like to do a demo on an original
coach in addition to whatever Frank shows up in.
It's a go on selling the club tools.
Complete Ken Thoma bearing kit with seal installation tool.
Knuckle grease zerk jig
Engine hoise with ratcheting, sliding, cable come along that is made for
this application
Torsion bar unloader tools (2) SOLD
In addition, I'll be bringing some perfect knuckles with the grease zerks
installed
One pair RH and LH Caddy 500 Eldo exhaust manifolds (cast iron)
One pair of GMC RH and LH exhaust manifolds (cast iron) (the RH one may be
from a Toro)
One pair of 1-ton knuckles for someone wishing to save a little money on
the conversion.
One complete virgin core Olds 403 (you come and get it)
The running 455 out of my GMC (you come and get it)
I also have a perfect set of Toro lower control arms (won't bring 'em
unless someone wants 'em)
