Just got home from the great rally in Alb. I have an 85 Chevy full size van that I'm pulling the engine out of. Any input would be welcomed on putting that cruise control in my GMC. Or fixing what I have in the GMC. Bob Dunahugh

I put a vacuum transducer type cruise from an early 80s gm pickup in my GMC. It was basically the same as the original equipment set up in my GMC including a transducer (http://appliedgmc.com/search.itml?icQuery=cruise), vacuum powered throttle control etc.  If your van has an electronic cruise, you can probably adapt it.  My setup worked fine for a year, now it needs a transducer rebuild.  I put one from a Buick in my Olds Tornado back in the early seventies, it worked great, even after I tore it apart and reassembled it to see how it worked!  When I sold the Olds, I moved it to my Corvette.

Applied GMC caries rebuilt transducer modules. if I had it to do again, I would use the module as a core for a rebuilt one from Jim K. If your current GMC has or had a similar module, it should be an easy reinstall of parts.  I got some parts from Jim such as the mounting bracket and the speedo cable from the transducer to the transmission.

Be sure you have a way to easily cut power to the module on your test drive.  A wrong vacuum connection can convert an action to engage into a full throttle acceleration experience that can last until you turn off the key and lock your steering! No big scare in a GMC, but it was quite a thrill in a corvette!

I am not sure of what your van has, but I used Spiffycar's album as a basis for the CC for my '78.

Rather than reworking the OEM CC stalk, I used a 4 channel remote, taped to the steering wheel as a control.

Does it have a vacuum motor for controlling the throttle? Most of that vintage do. In that case, it would be easier to fix the original motorhome cruise as you really would not gain much functionality by adapting it. However, the switches in the steering column are probably consistent with the electromotive units on the later models, like the 89 pick-ups. The vans did not make the change to he electromotive unit until later. The electromotive unit does not rely on vacuum so it is better for our high engine load coaches. http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/cruise-control-ac-delphi-electro-motor/p21936-1.html
