good morning to you all

Let me introduce me to you

I am 58 year old, retired from active work, sold my bussines and put the houe up for sale.
The wife and I want to do some traveling again just as when we were young in the 70 es
We have been looking for a rv for a year now. I do not like the small european rv, to claustrofobic although I like the trustwearthlyness of the mercedes and man trucks.
I do not like the fancy moderne cherry interiours of the new rv.
So I ended up with americans and found out that the newer ones are of inferiour quality.
Than I fall in love with the georgous rearend of the airstreams and lastly in the quality of the GMC.
So I have seen a few GMC her in Europe ( though there are not that many) and ended up with this Eleganza I found in Berlin.
Now she does not look much from the outside, neither does the original interior.
But underneath it looks real good: new tranny, quadrabag, alcoa, 6 diskbrakes. new steeringhous, straight frame, new blackwater, new bearing etc.
So I took it for a testdrive and it was sweet, except for the airsystem that does not work right and the dash aircon.
The wife has not seen it yet but she named her Olga inspired by the original interior.
So next week I have to pick her up in Berlin and drive the 500 miles home, always exiting with a new car. I will keep you posted about this trip

Now I know she was in Germany by 1991 but if anybody knows more history about her I will be happy Her id is ETZ166V101458

Welcome to the addiction Appie. No Blacklist for you for your trip but there is lots of help here if you need it. They dont have to be pretty to be fucntional and loved. 40 years old and still surprising to see them pop up all over the world.

Also on the worldwide topic, I recently saw a GMC parked in Cancun as we were passing by on a bus. Couldn't get the TMZ, but it was fun to see one down there as well.

apple,

Welcome to the GMC way of life.

Can you air up, set/isolate your airbags? If so, set them to the travel height and go (maybe even set the controls in hold).

No dash A/C is not a deal stopper. .....if the generator and roof air work. My GMC is a 1973 which even when it came from the factory new had dash A/C that wasn't worth much. Duct work had too many turns and didn't deliver the necessary cold air flow.
I fixed that with an after market under the dash A/C unit (you can see it on the GMC COOP website). Still works after 9 years as advertized.

Good luck on your trip home.

yes airbags no problem, all is new and tight. it just the regulation that does not work So I'll set them at travel height and figure out the rest when home.

Appie,

Welcome to the forum and to GMC ownership.

One of our members relocated from the Netherlands to New Mexico last year.
Two other members who post -- Roel B and Willem -- may both be in the Netherlands. Both have done a lot of restoration work and may be able to help in future with resources. You can do a member search for each to see their profile and find a link to send them private messages.

Best of luck,
Dennis

Great to have you among us. Let us know about the ride home. We certainly want to hear and send us Pictures also. Some folks come to US during the time we have GMC conventions and join us. Think about that. Our next one is in September and will be in Branson, Mo.

No reason not to have the Black List. Just register and be the first
from Denmark and pass the word around Europe. There is help in The
Netherlands so we can easily add Denmark.

The biggest advantage to the GMC is the support system. You have all these vendors with stock and improved stuff, and you have the community like on this site where you can get whatever information you need.

It's hard for me to picture paying more than 100k for a new motorhome, when I don't see anything designed nearly as well as the GMC, and I don't see people so ready and willing to help the rest of us out.

It's a good looking vehicle and as aerodynamic as a motorhome can probably get. Plus, with its efficient layout, you don't need a behemoth forty footer to have a good time in it.

Now if someone could just make a 28 mpg hybrid out of one of these babies.

Two of my best friends live in Copenhagen. Some years ago, they told me of a massive DK excise tax (180%, if I recall correctly. YEOW!!) on vehicle sales. There was a big incentive to keep repairing a car until there's nothing left to hang together. If that's still the case, then you did well by getting a 'driver' and then fix it up once registered.

Well yes thats right, with the exeption on oldtimers.
the import tax for oldtimer rv is 40 % of the original price for the vehicle itselv minus the living erea.
Now as we know the original orice was 15.000 Smile ( does anyone have a receipt with this price?) and the living is 50% we are down on 7500. that make a tax of 3750. I can live with that. Same is road tax by the kilogram. for a gmc that would be about 2500 dollars a year, but the oldtimer is 25 %.
Of course it is all much more expensive that in the us, but you only live once

I am still trying to work that out

A gas conversion will cost about 3500 usd and save me 25 cent per KM. roadtax will increase with 500 usd per ano

So how many miles do I have to drive each year before it pays off ?

It seems hardly worth the trouble

It would probably be more trouble then it would be worth. I would run it on petrol for a year or so and then see what you think.
